My wife is taking the kids to Florida over the Feb break. I am free to go skiing for 3 or 4 days. Since i will be traveling by myself i am looking for a place to go that is with in a 6 hr drive of the Tappen Zee Bridge.
Any thoughts?

She said no to Utah :x

back on topic
is it worth checking out le massif..

i also did a cost analysis for slc .. will cost around 1100
i can do the east on the cheap for a lot less

My initial reaction is to get reasonably priced lodging in the Waterbury, VT area, which gives you access to many places with a good shot at nice conditions (upcoming pattern will favor resorts north of I-89). That includes Stowe, Bolton, the Bush, and even Smuggs & Jay Peak if you're willing to drive futher on a day trip.

She's taking the kids, too? Don't look at a gift horse in the mouth re: driving vs. flying. Have fun, I'm jealous! 8)

If you know what the dates are and you are locked into those dates, given the east coast's fickle nature I would head as far north as possible. Maybe the chic choc's or somewhere else in Quebec. Jay can be amazing, but it is not immune to the upcoming thaw and rain storm. (At least according to bestskiweather.com)
However, if I were you I would show your wife a cost breakdown. Utah may only cost 200 dollars more for 3 or 4 days. Lift tickets at Alta or Powder mountain are cheap. You can stay in Sandy or Eden for very little per night. Car rental may be as little as 25 a day. Given that you're betting on good conditions during a specific time, I would take the risk(rain, high skier density, blue ice) out of the equation. I'm not saying that east coast skiing is going to be bad... but in my experience flexibility is the key towards attaining great eastern skiing. So, tell her that Utah is where you want to go... and after cost analysis you are more likely to get a better value per dollar spent in Utah than in Vermont.

I think rfarren hit the nail on the head . $1100 for ensured high quality skiing or $900 for maybe great, maybe OK, but 1/4 to 1/3 chance of coming back thinking you've wasted your $ and vacation time.

Jay is probably just at the far end of the 6 hour drive limit, but it would be worthwhile and probably cheapest to ski and stay up there for a few days. If you don't mind dirtbag accomodations, check out Grandpa Grunt's in Montgomery.

The Waterbury idea is a good one as well, but expect to pay over $80 to ski at Stowe and $70 for Sugarbush. MRG is your best bet if saving money is an issue.

If the snow in So Vt is good, staying near Londonderry and skiing at Magic is a nice inexpensive option, and would also be on the way to the northern reaches. BTW, Pico's lift tic is $49, another bargain.

There are many options. Play it by ear based on the weather.

Grampa Grunts might be a bit to flea bag for me  For 30 bucks a night i guess you can't beat it. I am looking to spend between 80 -100 a night.
I will wait to see what the weather does before i book. I hope the crappy pattern forecast for the next 2+ weeks doesn't beat up the areas to bad.

You are talking Feb. break so everywhere in VT will be fairly crowded and lodging options will be tight. Same time last year I skied Saddleback in ME and Ste Anne in QC. Think about heading up to Ste. Anne and Le Massif. There was no one there last Feb. break.

Burke might be a good bet too.

My son and I will be at Jay this year. We have a small condo booked about 3 miles from the driveway.

St Anne and Le Massif must be more than 6 hrs from the Tappan Zee.

If you are going across the border, you may consider Orford or Sutton. Look for package deals. Going solo will be difficult for cheap accomodations, as most places charge for double occupancy even if you are solo. Super 8 in Montpelier or Burlington may be your best bet in that case.

Sounds like Crank is inviting you to stay with him and his son 3 miles from Jay  .

Be careful what you wish for, there can't be that many condos 3 miles from Jay :D . Did I mention I cook a mean chicken piccata?

Apparently Canada won't let you in any more as of Jan 31 if you don't have a passport either. I guess they don't want any clueless Americans trapped in the great white north.
