To see a storm like that remove me completely the need to sleep

Actually, we got 8" of snow in about 3 hours. If it falls like that all night long, we should have a couple of feet by tomorrow morning

And looks like there is another storm on the forecast for this weekend !?

Good timing, cause it was tough last saturday to find some powder... even at Alta. The max we got is 8-12", but it was hard to find. Here is a little movie of the secret spot where we found probably the best snow last weekend :

http://www.zoneski.com/temp/alta1.wmv

And we did a nice little video of The Secret Glade just here :

http://www.zoneski.com/temp/alta2.wmv

Enjoy the powder and the woods

The snow was heavy and wet. But it was comin down hard. So I bolted from work at 3:30 and crawled to Greek Peak. It is tele-Tuesday, but, with this thick heavy snow, the Pocket Rockets were the right tool for the job. So I went alpine. Not a single regret.

The snow was boot deep when I started at 5pm at the top of Iliad. Riding the lift I was amazed to see fresh snow, right on the major trail. I took 2 runs there and had fresh turns the whole way down both times, whooppin and hollerin. There are some bumps in there and the thick snow made for a nice cushion. Oh what a feeling…fresh snow on moguls, sliced like butter with big fat skis. Gently bobbing up and down with ease.

The next 6 runs were down Eleysian Fields. The far right has the steepest pitch and lots of moguls. It had not been tracked at all!! Run after run I made my signature in the snow. I skied alone for the first 2 hours. There was no one around. Every run I had the trails to myself. Where is everyone, I wondered. The skiing is fine. All the school programs were cancelled on
account of the weather and not too many people wanted to brave the roads. So I ruled Greek Peak from 5-7. I had my MP3 player so I was able to tune into my zone, dancing on the moguls in the fresh snow as Tom Petty sang Free Fallin in my ears. I could sing out-loud and no one would hear. Finally I noticed some other tracks on my trail. The tele-posse must be near. After 2 hours of skiing alone, I finally ran into 3 friends who totally rip.

Once we tracked up all the trails, we headed for the woods. It was nighttime, and we didn’t have any headlamps. Ski patrol pulls passes for this stuff. But it was such a beautiful night, and the energy was right, so we dove into the darkness. There was untouched thigh deep powder in there. I couldn’t believe it was Greek Peak. We did some pretty tight trees in the dark, though the reflected light gave enough shadows to see where the trees were, though you could not tell what was right underfoot. You had to feel it. But since there was so much snow, you could really trust it. Surely this probably was not a good idea for many reasons, primarily safety. But the snow was so deep we just floated through between the trees. I got turned onto some new stashes that are unbelievable. There’s so much potential in those woods. You just have to be careful not to get caught and not to hurt yourself in there. We watched out for each other and made sure we all got out safely. When we were re-entering a slope from the woods a snowmobile drove by. We all ducked back into the shadows, unseen by
the ski patrol.

I skied non-stop from 5-9pm. Ate a power bar for dinner. We were the last ones to get on the lift and then took the final run, still getting fresh tracks. It was a stellar night of skiing with some of the best outlaw skiers at Greek Peak.

Probably 6-7" of snow fell yesterday by 9pm. Greek Peak reports 8" for the last 24 hours. That was on top of the foot of fresh snow that had fallen the week prior...so the skiing was pretty much bottomless...especially in the woods.

What is Greek Peak's snow total for the year so far?

Sounds like this "weather event" on Friday will mean freezing rain for everyone south of the Thruway. Bummer, I was hoping to hit up Bobcat in the Catskills.
