What are the easier Blue Runs at Park City???

I firmly disagree with the first response. Blue-rated runs at Park City are, in general, not as steep as those at Deer Valley. DV's are impeccably groomed, but if you're not parallel and thus wedging or stemming to control speed, you'll get tired fast.

When my son Adam was 4 I took him to Utah for a week and had him in ski school most of the time. At Park City I had him out for a whole afternoon after a morning class and he was going strong on nearly all the blues we skied. The next morning we skied Deer Valley and he fell asleep exhausted at lunch and did not go out for the afternoon.

The Canyons is a mixed bag. Blues typically have some pitch dropping off a ridgeline, followed by a long flat section in the bottom of a canyon returning to the lift.

Thanks Tony!!!! We do ski without wedging and can make parallel turns no problem. The only real issue is my wife doesn't like the long steep pitched runs that don't give you some flat areas where she can rest or regain her composure. Any particular run suggestions at PC, DV, Canyons or Brighton that fit this mold.

Deer Valley...all of it...

Have to seriously disagree with this one, because if you've ever skied Deer Valley, yes you know that they have some smooth, buffed out easy cruisers, but they also have so fantastic expert terrain that stays relatively untracked alot longer than similiar terrain at many areas do.

The runs in and around the Daly Chutes in Empire canyon, Onatrio Bowl, Mayflower Bowl all have some tough terrain with great trees. Plus some really nice bump runs exist too, like on Flagstaff and the top of Empire Canyon.

Frankly though I love that deer Valley has the reputation of just being an over priced mountain filled with easy groomers, because it just means the the vast amount of "good" terrain stays less tracked out even longer. Plus, I'll put their chocolate chip cookies up against any out there

Jeff,

Everyone is right about the trails at Deer Valley, PCMR, and The Canyons. As someone who currently teaches or coaches at all three resorts, mostly on groomed blue terrain no less, each resort brings a slightly different flavor.

Deer Valley has easier blue trails off Flagstaff Mtn. Problem there is that Northside lift gets pretty busy, and so do the trails. Over on Bald Mtn (accessed by Wasatch, Mayflower, and Sultan chairs) the groomed runs (double blue and a couple of groomed black) have much steeper sections, generally broken up by flatter sections. Problem is, everyone skis the groomed at Deer Valley and a lot of their terrain is actually off-piste. So all their narrow blue trails wind up like feeling like super highways.

PCMR has great, long, consistent and WIDE blue runs off of King Con. Same for Motherlode. Best thing about King Con and Motherlode is they are very sheltered from the wind. Some other blue runs on other parts of the mountain, as well, like Silverlode and Thaynes lifts, a little higher up Thaynes Canyon. All these are north facing, so have great snow. And the grooming and food at PCMR is every bit as good as Deer Valley, if not better.

The Canyons is much more spread out. It has a lot of long, easy blue runs that connect the different canyons (hench the name).

Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions, or want a private ski lesson, 435-940-0590. Or just ask a mountain employee when you get here, and check the grooming report.

Mike
