I'm heading to the US tomorow from Montreal. I'm thinking about 3 stations (driving doesnt afraid me and I'll leave early in the morning (around 3h45-4pm) I'm thinking about Sugarloaf, stowe or Sugarbush... Witch one is the best you think for snowboarding. What's your love (Valentine day!) for the station?!

thank

Ben,

I've got no specific information, but if I was you I go to whatever is closest - it should all be pretty darn good.

I?m sure Vermont is much closer to you. However, in 2003 we took Highway 10 to near Sherbrooke (Exit 128, I think) and headed to route 212 which we took to past Woburn and Coburn Gore, Maine, and took Hwy 27 to Stratton. Sugarloaf is a ways past Stratton. It was sure a beautiful drive in the summer. I don?t know how good a road it would be in the winter. I have fond memories of skiing Sugarloaf many years ago. (Back when they only had two tandem T-bars to just below the snowfields.

I would head out to:

-Sutton: It might be very windy tomorrow... Sutton keeps it's snow pretty well....
-Stowe: expensive but... Might be swepped... or over-crowded... you never know...
-Sugarbush could be a safe bet...

-Smuggler's Notch is pretty closed by... but i've never been in winter...

I think Jay might be closed on all summit lifts... It's just that type of storm that gets Jay more snow... but more winds...

No matter where you go, there will be snow and LOTS OF SNOW PIGS!

MAybe try a smaller resort... RiverCoil had fun today...

You called it Big Jay, Jay Peak only has 3 of 8 lifts operating and says the Tram and Freezer will be down all day.

Any idea of what thoughts of what tomorrow may be like? I hope that there is enough snow that the trails won't be blown down to base, and would appreciate any input from the Jay pros here. Trying to decide if I should let kids play hooky, stay enroute tonight and hit Jay first thing in the morning.

I called Jay at 2:30 this afternoon to try and get an idea what the likt situation may be like tomorrow. All they could say is that it is day to day. I asked about the weather forecast for tomorrow and if they had an idea what the winds may be like, and was told they heard it might be like today. If it was just me, I could take a flyer but it's to up in the air to pull the kids out of school, drive 3.5 hours, and stay in a motel to do the bonnie quad and village lift. Not Jay's fault, just the way the weather breaks.

I just called my parents up at Jay... apparently, it's still blowing hard right now... Probably going to be the same as today... Jet and Bonnie...

My opinion, if it still snows tomorrow at Jay, expect the Flyer and Tram to be on hold... If it's sunny or just overcast, everything should be spinning...

Even if only the Bonnie is open, you are still able to score lots of freshies of that lift! Bonnie and Jet is all i need to enjoy Jay! Well, to really enjoy it, i would need a "working" shoulder so that i'd be able to ride... According to my physio, things are going great and i could even think of going back on the board by mid-march... Ah well...

when you say "trails", are you including glades? because the "trails" at jay are almost always wind blown even after a big dump, sometimes especially after a big dump due to the subsequent winds (case in point). jay is a roll of the dice on the lifts, as today can attest. but if you are looking for nice loose powder snow with a near guarantee of lifts turning, my recent reports from burke should look fairly enticing. there will not be any powder to be found on the open trails though regardless of your destination. powder in the woods at jay seems likely though considering the lack of open lifts in the past few days. depends what you want most and if you are willing to risk wind holds.

With trails, I wasn't including the glades, we only venture into the baby green glades. I decided to not go, the dice are loaded to heavy to pull them from school. We'll be at Tremblant Sunday, even though they only got 5". grrr.

It's a bit late to respond, but Sugarloaf and Stowe are my two favorite areas in the East.

Smugglers is often overlooked by Montrealers, however the drive is under 2 hours from Montreal and I prefer the terrain here than at Jay.

Smuggs: VT's best overall ski experience...discussion
