Whiteface??

Thinking about going up to Lake Placid the weekend of 12/19-22. I heard the skiing up there is getting pretty good.

We'll likely be 4 women and 1 dude...and the women can ski the dude into the dirt.

Wondering if there are any other FTO dudes who would like to rip with the chicks. There may be an extra bed or 2 at the house, we are just paying for heat, elec and cleaning, so it isn't totally free but it is cheap.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Yep, we're heading up Friday morning (12/19) and will ski Saturday and Sunday. We're set for accomms, but I'll be glad to watch Sharon ski me into the dirt. Maybe we can convince Harvey to come up for Saturday since he's got his cabin near Gore.

Jason, put me on the phone with wifey. I'll tell her that she's lucky you're not taking off for a two-week trip to the Arlberg. Since you're such a nice guy, she'll only have to deal with you spending two days at Whiteface.

I think Whiteface did much better than Gore did (2 inches) out of last night and today.

You can read my TR from today at Gore on my blog. I won't even bother to post it here as it was more of the same from yesterday and pretty uneventful. You might read it for a laugh though.

Back on topic...what concerns me is this:

^^That's the main reason I made the drive this weekend.

I had no idea about the warm front. Never a dull moment here in the northeast. Temps plummeted this afternoon... it was 9 degrees at the top of Hunter.

New avatar - me likey.

Dude...you should be WAY proud of me:

• My new avatar* is almost in focus and it's EAST COAST. Way to represent.

• I posted some pics INLINE in a TR.

• I bought FATTER skis this weekend. At 86mm they are ALMOST FAT ENOUGH to be groomer skis for my next visit to Utah. 8)

And on topic...I might actually be able to make that WF trip.

(*thanks J Deluxe).

2 days of solid rain, then down to 3F, sounds lovely
.

last time it snowed at the mighty Mammoth Mtn was ???? and the amount was??? :) O:)

Well, in Tony's defense, there's a huge difference between not snowing, and two days of 50-degree rain followed by a 3ºF freeze.

Since my shoulder is really improving, I am hoping to get up to the Tug this weekend if the LES machine cranks.

In 2 weeks, Whiteface should be the Iceface we all know and love and with any luck, there will be some new snow on top of that icy base.

LAKE EFFECT SNOWS WILL DEVELOP AGAIN WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON INTO
THURSDAY NIGHT AND THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF
SIGNIFICANT SNOW

I hope you're right, but how is that possible when they're predicting warm temps even in the ADK High Peaks?

edit: my mistake... forgot that it's supposed to get cold again.

jamesdeluxe will be up there that weekend ... i might head up too, i'm working on my wife ](*,)

So, I've got a great deal for a trip to Placid, yeh, 4 girls and only 1 guy with a couple of extra beds. Good luck with that, eh.

This is precisely my point. I have several times skied at Mammoth after a month of no snow, and the upper mountain steeps are still dry carvable chalk with no melt/freeze. Mammoth averages less than one day of rain per ski season. Anybody who books more than about 3-4 days ahead in the East is rolling the dice. You pay your $ and you take your chances.

To answer the question, in the past month Mammoth has had 9 inches of snow, which fell Nov. 26-28. The 3-4 foot upper mountain base remains from the Halloween through November 8 storms. 1500 acres are skiable, and the 300+ groomed acres are about as much as total terrain open anywhere in the East. Any eastern area with that weather pattern would be down to the rocks or bulletproof by now. It's all about altitude and snow preservation. I will be up there one of the next 2 weekends and I'm not worried.

Jason, BRING THE WIFE!!

Lake Placid is a great place to visit, even if you don't ski. There' s so much to do and holiday shopping on the Main St is quite festive.

Lake Placid IMHO is the best ski town on the east coast, if not in the whole of the united states. It is one of the few places where if your ski conditions go to pot, you don't have to be upset because there is so much else to do. I took my gf there last winter, and she cried when we drove in at night because she thought it was so pretty.

Tony has got a very legitimate point, although I will say it isn't really a 3-4 day window, but more often a 7-10 day window, given that you are going north. If you are going south, like stratton, or the catskills then really it is a 3-4 day window as the snow/rain line often cuts through the middle of vermont. However, with whiteface you can normally hedge your bets about 7-10 days ahead of time due to its northerly location.
