This is dangerous logic, well off the mark IMHO. All areas have slow starts sometimes. The odds of favorable conditions don't cross 50% until about Dec. 15 even in the most reliable places.
Empirical data point:
One or two seasons ago (maybe earlier?), iirc, Alta didn't open until after T-giving with only a WROD, then the first two weeks of December were relatively dry. There were a few small storms, but all of us made sure we were on our rock skis and endured a lot of damage to our ski bases. We didn't get a decent amount of snow till a week before xmas.

My logic is I have free lodging with family in Wilson Wyoming (Jackson) and would only go out if Targhee gets snow by Thanksgiving. Airfare is the other factor. I've flown out for as little as $350 and won't spend more than $450. Nothern Vermont is 9 hours from my home, so I'd rather spend my time sleeping and reading on the plane. Also, I only bring my boots and rent AT skis in Wilson, WY. I borrow poles from family. I've also left a pair of Scarpa T2s out there... We'll see as plans are always subject to change....

The more sensible version of the above statement would be: "My first trip this year will be when it snows somewhere within driving distance. I'll never commit advance $$$ for a trip before Xmas."
Keep the FF miles on standby if you see a big lineup of storms in UT, but have the car ready for any eventuality. You never know when you might get some mid-December blower, even at the most unlikely places:

Don't forget only a few years ago the NE had monster november/december/early january. It was better than out west, at least until the january thaw.

good luck wih that.....

i'm no big fan of pre-december skiing anywhere due to not enough base. the past 2 novembers i've been lucky enough to score 3 powder days in november out of a total of 6 days skiing. that's a better average than my 2, 9 day trips to the wasatch in jan of 05 and 07 where it only snowed 3 of those 18 days. nov 17/18 of 2007 i skied a nice 6-8 inches of new snow at stowe for 2 days and there was enough base to ski non snowmaking trails like perry merrill and the gondi line. last year at sunday river i hit a 14 inch storm just after thanxgiving and 3 peaks were already open. so, the last 2 novembers have been good here. if you are basing you pompous decision to never ski in the east again b4 x-mas, great! more for us.

Maybe I just find the NE boring!! :stir:

now that's just silly talk BBD! silly i tell you. nah seriously though. if i had to drive as far as you do to get my turns in, i'd be traveling by plane more to other locales as well. i have a very flexy sched and live close enough to hit all of the best that the N.E. has to offer. which can be quite good.

i do appreciate yer farmers almanac thingy. maybe we'll have another good'n

This guy above also looks bored, but he's out West. It's a matter of perspective.

Or perhaps just tired from an action packed day on the last lift ride.

Don't these people live there in January too, when JH skiing is at its prime?

Is this the same icelantic who took a leave of absence, came back, and promised to play nice and contribute to a live-and-let-live atmosphere? :-k

Not that I'm complaining... I prefer the version that calls Marc C an old goat and takes shots at East haters.

Ya my guess is around the 29th at 2 or 3 pm. I know some of the crew you will be with. I'll be in the lot after the crowds show up. I am easy to find.

This afternoon, while driving back from a mountain bike ride... for no particular reason, I remembered icelantic's poem -- the one where he rhymed "gaper" with "Sunday paper."
