wind protection?

A quick question for you guys..

Looking at skiing south of the border on Thursday. Usually I would go to Jay, but I know the winds are going to be high and I'd rather go someplace where the upper-mountain lifts are likely to be online.

How do Stowe and Smuggler's compare on days with high winds?

Thanks!

All the places you've mentioned Upper lifts are likely to have issue in a high wind situation.

I haven't been to Stowe on a storm day in years, but I recall Stowe shutting down the quad. Smuggs's Madonna is also subject to be wind affect. Upper lift best batting average in storm would be the single at Mad, but it also depends of the wind direction. I don't know how Sugarbush's lift are on storm days.

I would aim for the place that has the most terrain that doesn't require the main lift.

james mentioned to me that Magic Mt is protected from the wind
Magic is a wee bit out of Colin's driving range. I think he's talking about northern VT. What about Burke?

Thanks, good tips. I thought about MRG, but I ski with snowboarders
No friends on a powder day.

Never skied Burke in a storm or high wind day. Well, I don't think I have.

Is Sutton protected from the wind better than Jay? Better refuge on really blowing days?

Indeed it is. However, i'll already be at Sutton on Wednesday for their 50% off day

I'll be showing a friend the townships / north VT so we want to get around

I have and they had the Poma surface lift running. I assume that it's still there?

If Burke gets hit with snow, I'd go there rather than dealing with windholds and potential crowds at the more popular places. It'll be comparatively empty, and it's an easy drive from I-91.

Come to think about it, I went down to Burke during a snowstorm. It took forever to get there. The poma was still there, we were using it extensively, this was of course during the ski team's training camp back in 1989.

Yup. Burke is THE place to be on a windy and snowy day. No crowds, protected quad, surface lift on backup even if the quad does go down, great trees, etc. Burke does not quite get the snow that the spine of the greens does. On a big storm, you can expect half as much snow at Burke as Jay or Stowe. But you can also expect to ride the lift by yourself all day too. Even on a powder day.

Last friday Stowe had the quad and gondola offline. Bolton had lifts down. Sugarbush told us on the phone that all lifts with the possible exception of castlerock would be running, but when we got there the summit chairs were not running so we made the most of it on the chairs that were turning. As we had hit Smuggs the day before we didn't check there or Burke.
