    Swain is closing

Holy smokes. that's where I learned to ski, thanks to the PE requirement at RIT in 1975. 6 lessons and lifts $30. 6 rentals $30. That's where I got my love of skiing, moved to New England and never looked back. Thanks for the start Swain. Hope a buyer gives it some love.....

Ski Scene in MWV on Friday 12/21/7

My tractor-beam is set on skiing in the MWV (Mount Washington Valley, a-la North Conway area) Friday 12/21. Candidates include Wildcat, Black and Cranmore. The later two because I've never been to them before (2 in 1 day, maybe?) Anyhoo, I'm looking to make fresh tracks and am quite enamored...

    You Buyin' This?

I think we take out rotisserie and have ourselves a grille event. I would love to feed this back to Mr. Bastardi and ask for him to explain what went wrong. Weather guesstimators have a very short memory, which we need to help ameliorate...

    Bolton Valley

My family of intermediate-skills has a delightful time at Bolton for one or two days. You mix with the Burlington crowd, which is predominantly families and quite friendly and considerate. We stay with friends in Stowe and day trip around. I get up a couple more times for "big boys" trips...

Best Ski Area near Buffalo, NY?

Yeah, right. Only if you define 5 hours, 300 miles as "close" That was the real problem with living in Western NY. There was nothing big that was close. So once you graduated off the bunnies, you were forced to move. (I did!)

Best Ski Area near Buffalo, NY?

Well, "shoulder's reach" shouldn't be taken literally - it was a figure of speech. Then again, I've had my share of knee-high and waist high days. When I lived there, if you traveled there when it was snowing (when wasn't it? - thanks Lake Erie!) - the drive could be kinda hairy due to the...

Best Ski Area near Buffalo, NY?

I found them are all about the same. PeaknPeak and Kissing Bridge. KB sources more than it's share of Olympic material, and these two areas simply get so much snow they don't know what to do with it it. It would be total heaven if only they had more vertical. HV is a good choice, a little...

Will need passport to cross the US-Canada border in 2007-8.

I've traveled back and forth all my life, starting when I was a baby and we lived smack on the border. Now that I have little muchkins, (er, not so little any more) there is one more thing other than a passport that you and your kids that you need. If you are traveling as the lone parent with...

Ski advice needed for biz trip to Sacramento nxt wk

Hey Guys, I'm back. It was Squaw on Friday and Alpine on Saturday. Thanks for all the tips, it worked out great, though skiing solo can be a drag, it was worth it anyways. Here's a little "review" from an Easterner's perspective Squaw on Friday. I started on the Funitel. (why do they...

Ski advice needed for biz trip to Sacramento nxt wk

thanks for the strategy on Squaw. Looks good. I can wait 10 or 15 mins on a weekend, albeit I too am spoiled with midweek skiing/no lines. Me thinks given the snows predicted, that I'd rather get up there the night before than get stuck in traffic the morning I want to ski. great...

Ski advice needed for biz trip to Sacramento nxt wk

thanks a lot. you gave me a lot of choices. I'm gonna do what I do best - play it out day by day. I've kinda got my heart set on squaw. I'm an earlybird, so no problem. It's really dumping today, with windholds on higher elevations, I'm psyched, since I've got a full week of work ahead...

Ski advice needed for biz trip to Sacramento nxt wk

Good advice, thanks guys. I am an earlybird, and early strategies work in the east. My days are fixed, nothing i can do about it. I need a level set from east-west; What do you consider crowded? Lift line times? Density on slopes? I'll look into these lesser-known areas, that's the same...

Ski advice needed for biz trip to Sacramento nxt wk

I will be in Sacramento on business next week. I'm going to graft some skiing onto the end of the trip (fri-sat-sun) and would appreciate some advice. I was advised to head west on I80 and checkout Squaw, Tahoe or Kirkwood. I'm an advanced eastern skier (read: not a lot of hours on powder)...

    Camera Phones to take Skiing

I need to get a new cell phone. It occurred to me that I might be able to consolidate my gadgets by getting a camera phone. Can anyone comment on how good a camera phone is for trail report photos? I have a habit of losing things, so the fewer gadgets in my pockets the better. I recognize...
