If you looked at their web site on Wednesday or Thursday, they were indeed open. It was way too warm & wet to survive the long weekend. We arrived on Friday. They were closed by then. No refund either!! ](*,)

whoomp, there it is. sr makin snow

I haven't skied before Thanksgiving for 10 years. My wife and I went to K-mart ten years ago for Thankgiving and hiked bare trails for three days. They forgot to tell us that they closed due to lack of snow. Actually, their website said they were open. To add to the insult, we turned down an...

Do recent early snows bode well for this El Nino season?

I saw a woollybear catapillar wearing an avalanche beacon the other day.... what does that mean? :-k

    AltaBird in December

I just got a quote at the Cliff for Feb 2010 of $2,300 for 5 nights and four day pass. I'd say that you got a good deal....

Northern Vermont Snow Advantage vs. Rest of the Northeast

During my College Days I skied in Western NY (Holiday Valley) and although it was often icy, we would ocassionally get dumped on when it got wicked cold with the prevailing west wind. I assume that was lake effect coming off of Ontario [probably Lake Erie, TC]. I was not a big powder fan back...

    EPIC SKI PASS

It's quite a sight!! The local carpenters (aka former US Ski Team Members) usually clean up... and of course Tom Moe makes a showing...... :ski:

    EPIC SKI PASS

I agree with the sketchy conditions at Jackson in March. This is more of a visit the family trip and watch the crazy cousins squeeze into their speed suits and fly down Snow King in the Town Race.

    EPIC SKI PASS

Thanks for your very helpful explanation and I imagine that the reason is in market data points that I could never understand anyway. The industry is very complicated these days, as compared to when I started skiing almost 40 years ago. I once flew from NJ to Springfield VT in a Cessna 172 @...

    EPIC SKI PASS

Vail resorts offers an EPIC SKI PASS for $599 for a season of unlimited and unrestricted skiing at any of their six resorts in CO and CA. The pass pays for itself in 7 ski days. That is a GREAT DEAL for the local skiers. And the resort benefits from the ancillary purchased made while they...

    And the FARMER'S ALMANAC says....

I'm a big spender, what can I say....... Plus the Comfort Inn Suites is right across the street from a good sushi resturant and a great fish taco place. Since I don't drink, I fit right in with the crowd... \:D/

    And the FARMER'S ALMANAC says....

Tony, I live in western NJ. And I have found that SLC is a very easy place to get into and out of, on schedule. Also, I stay in the Midvale / Sandy area for $85/night and ski at Alta. Airfare usually runs @$340 and I take a shuttle from the airport to the hotel and the city bus to Alta. I...

    And the FARMER'S ALMANAC says....

The key here is being able to be flexible.... unfortunately for me I have little flexibility in my schedule to drive 6 hours for a couple of days on sketchy snow / ice.... my dreams of being a ski bum have long been lost to having a family and a demanding job. So... I schedule at least three...

    And the FARMER'S ALMANAC says....

I grew up skiing the East Coast ice and it was the best training ground for learning how to ski in all conditions. But 40 years later I'd rather ski on soft snow.... call me a Wimp, but I'd rather live by the old saying "ice is for cocktails". BTW: might add that when I learned to ski 40 years...

    And the FARMER'S ALMANAC says....

Thanks for the comforting words.... this is my usual preseason anxiety. Tonight I put the Thule box on the Suburban and burn an old ski sock as a tribute the the Snow God. BBD

BUT THEN AGAIN.. I just found this report out of NOAA: CURRENT EL NINO CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO STRENGTHEN AND PERSIST INTO THE BOREAL WINTER AND 2010. And the FARMER'S ALMANAC says....

The 2010 edition of the Farmers' Almanac goes on sale today, and it predicts a cold winter for the nation's midsection, The AP reported. Numbing cold will predominate from the Rocky Mountains in the West to the Appalachians in the East. Sandi Duncan, managing editor of the 192-year-old...
