Day 19: Here's the short version -

07_alta_admin_patsy_marley_061217.jpg

(Of course, right after that photo was snapped I hit an unseen drift and proceeded to follow the subsequent head plant with a full somersault, landing in a perfect La-Z-Boy position with skis sticking out of the snow! Marc_C happened to observe the whole incident from an adjacent ridge.)

Now the long version:

The 5 a.m. report showed 7" of new snow. OK, that was on top of the 11 inches the day before, but not quite what I was hoping for out of this storm.

In reality, it either puked snow after 5 am, or that report was just plain underestimated. Even now the 4:30 pm report claims 6 additional inches, but there's more...lots more. Sure, there was some wind loading here and there, but it was legitimately knee to thigh deep, and full-on nipple deep on wind-loaded aspects. I dropped into something as innocuous as the east side of Germania Pass and instantly entered the white room with snow flowing over my head, masking visibility for three full seconds. Face shots actually became routine throughout the day. You had to choose your terrain carefully, for even parts of West Rustler weren't steep enough to ski in the deep snow.

There's no way that I can recount our day run by run, it's all one white blur. We managed to score untracked all the way to my quitting time just past 3 pm. Highlights definitely included Fred's Trees, Susie's Trees, Catherine's and Patsy Marley. I was skiing with Marc_C, Pat, and Pat's son Brad, and Brad really put me through my paces - he's half my age and trains religiously as a racer on the cycling circuit. He's also a terrific skier. It was nice of him to let an old man try to keep up. I also caught a first run with Lookin'4Powder and his friend Tom, who were fortunate enough to be at Alta today for their last day before flying back east.

By the time we quit, neither Pat, Marc_C nor I could easily muster the energy to even get up off a chairlift to unload, although Ironman Brad was still off tearing up the mountain with his buddy who works at Watson Shelter. The Kid spent the afternoon at Snowbird and reported untracked in Tiger Tail right up to the 4:30 closing bell.

Just action shots in the photo gallery today:

Well, one more shot, this one in Susie's Trees at around 2:15 shows lots of untracked lines left for the taking.

i just knew i did not want to click on this thread. :?

i should have a pair of free airline tickets coming my way next year and i think i know where i am heading. three more years and the college bills will be paid off and i can't wait to blow that extra $1500 a year on trips out west when the east has periods like we are currently experiencing.

way to chew up the pow, that first shot of you is great.

Or ABF Freight will ship all your worldly possessions out here for about 1.5x that. It's only a 20-minute daily drive thereafter.

Yeah, but not nearly as spectacular as the headplant immediately following.

Welcome back, tirolerpeter! Now that I see you're back posting, have you contemplated an ETA for your move?

After seeing pictures like that I don't know if I'll be able to wait until our Utah trip at the end of Feb...

I can confirm that it was DEEP today. I skied the 'bird. Powder was deep enough that you needed a pretty steep slope to keep going. I inhaled lots of snow (read: face shots) :D

Can't wait to go back east next week and hit killington and jay peak....

Hi Marc. No, we have to see how a couple of additional medical procedures work out for me. I had the aneurysm "clipping" procedure done last week (12/5) and am now recovering. As soon as things stop "rattling around" inside my skull, we will set up a "launch date" for our trip west. I really "lost" about a week of time post-operatively. This brain aneurysm is tough stuff. Can't wait to join you and your crew on a regular basis. Thanks for all your hospitality to date. BTW, I think my sons and daughter are even more anxious to see me move than I am.

Well, I guess you've now made it "public" so I won't have to refer to the situation via ambiguities anymore. Glad to hear things are coming along well, although Susan's got some entertaining stories to tell. Just the fact that you're posting tells me that things are coming along well. Keep us all in the loop.

Good vibes to you Peter. Hope everything works out fine and our back on your skis in deep powder as soon as possible.

Take care...

Hi folks Newbie here. I've been lurking around here for sometime now but after reading the post from Tirolerpeter is decided to register.

My mom just had the same procedure done for an aneurysm, she had the clipping done at Millstein hosp in NYC. She is 68 years old and is recovering nicely. She spent 2 days in the hosp and was discharged.
We are very lucky they found the aneurysm, she was having a rapid heart beat and was taken to Mather Hosp and one thing lead to another , they decided to do an MRI on her head and found the bubble was 7 mm long. She had the surgery on Nov 29th.

Best of luck to you and have a speedy recover !!

Happy holidays to all.

That shouldn't stop you. Things are constantly rattling around inside both me and Marc's skulls and have been for years.
Glad to see things are going well for you.

Chas44, happy to have you register, and contribute often! Here's wishing your mother a speedy and complete recovery.
