American Election 2024

Trump says "you know we've cut drug prices by 1200%, 1300%, 1400%, 1,500%."

This MSN article says
"The recent firing of the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has one analyst worried that President Donald Trump may end up sabotaging the U.S. economy — and the United States itself — over perceived slights to his ego.

In a Monday op-ed for the New York Times, columnist Thomas Friedman warned of the precedent set by Trump firing Erika McEntarfer — the person in charge of gathering data that scores of investors, companies and economists all depend on to gauge the health of the economy. Friedman lamented at the meek response to McEntarfer's firing by those very same experts who count on the government to provide reliable data."

and includes link to Thomas Friedman NY times editorial that was in my local paper.

Please... Do not engage me. ;)

My mom was a nurse growing up.. She really fought for healthcare for all.

My Dad - he loved Reagan. Now he dislikes Trump.

I sit with him The Villages Florida.
The Villages have a reputation. Is your dad the odd man out? I've sort of assumed that the expanding population in places like the Villages is the main reason Florida has swung so sharply right since 2000.

"Dear Diary, I'm bummed that he forgot he used to like me. All this time I thought a pal is a wonderful thing. My neighbor cheered me up, look what they'd planned for Mike Pence..."

I wished they did not move away from South Florida
Why did they move from South Florida? Inland central Florida as a place to live??? Just shoot me! If you're getting up in years and need a more structured retirement community, I'm sure they are not lacking in the Atlantic and Gulf Coast areas.

Yes.

They have place in Falmouth, MA which is their savior for the Summer. May- September.

Did I tell you I am a New England guy?

My partner has a place in Edgartown MA (100 years - he’s so into real estate)….so it’s always back and forth from Woods Hole, MA which- -15 minutes from their house.

But I now have to drive them Florida to Massachusetts - once year. Tech Stock market money allows it once. My brother is not helpful.

Unless someone really wants to be oceanside, I think of reasons to live inland.

My aunt lived in Ft. Lauderdale for the last decade or so of her long life. She had a condo on the coast with a view of the ocean. More than once she had to evacuate because of a hurricane. She was a professor who had traveled the world. Last trip was to South Africa in her 80s with her favorite nephew (also retired by then) as a travel companion. After that she rarely went farther than a few miles from her condo building.

Of course, some hurricanes come from the Gulf and cross FL instead of going north after landfall. Been a few times in the last few decades that Disney World and other theme parks had to close because of major storms.

Hurricane season in the southeast is June through November.

my inlaws have a place on the cape and boyton beach..they hire a driver to drive the car each way. They fly down the day before the car arrives...
that said , this might have been their last snowbird year..

Yes there is flood risk if you are on a barrier island. Liz' situation above the flood zone but a very short drive to the beach seems ideal if you must live in Florida. FYI there are lots of places in inland Florida that also have significant flood risk.

It’s me.

My brother - he does not care.

So it’s me.

...if by interesting you mean in every house all throughout America, it's only the dogs and cats who haven't yet figured out the truth about pedonald.

The ruling class at sub trailer trash level. Go girls!

To set the scene, jetting in here from Washington to meet an evil-doer and end the status quo, is a Powerful Dealmaker.

Alaska and Putin?

No, silly. Remember Maxwell, from uhhh Florida? Seems that involved at least some sort of deal. The timeline...

22 Jul: DOJ announces Todd Blanche trip.

24-25: Nobody seems to know or provide a reason for 2 days of what, negotiating? Secret promises of giveaways?

1 Aug: Sex crime victims and the press and public learn of Maxwell move to Club Fed...only after it's a done deal.

It kinda sucks that I just wrote Putin's playbook here, cuz all he's gotta do to trick Trump is ACT LIKE MAXWELL.

I've been out of town for a few days playing golf with this buddy in WV:

I missed the big DJT take-over in DC. But I'll tell you as a life long suburban Washingtonian that car jackings and unhoused people are way up in the city these days. I'm not opposed to a little clean up action in this regard.

Compared to when? Most of these crime stats skyrocketed in 2020-2021 in the fallout from the pandemic and reduced policing in the wake of George Floyd. My understanding is that violent crime stats have fallen back to at least pre-pandemic levels now.
It's really getting interesting over there. Calling in the National Guard. Seems overreach to me.
It may be overreach but in the case of D.C. it's not likely disputable via the courts. D.C. is by history ruled directly by Congress. Over the years Congress has granted a limited degree of home rule. D.C elects a mayor but does not have representation in the U.S. Congress.
