I was hoping to read more reports of face shots in this forum, but I guess there are only a few real die-hards here who will brave blizzard conditions to get to the goods.

If you did ski, please post your report.

Hey Marc...did you get out? or were you snowed in this weekend? Been so quiet lately.
 
I was thinking the exact same thing! My guess is that north of Killington the snowfall totals were much lower, so no real face shot action. Further south, I think snow removal and driving fear was the issue.

The media likes to blow these things way out of proportion-they made it sound like you would die if you set foot outside! Damn, I drove home from Hunter on Sat night and then got up early Sun, blew the snow out of the driveway and headed right back up to Hunter.

Know what? I'm kind of glad people stayed home as long as they were safe...more snow for us!

Me too!! I'm not complaining about the lack of crowds, though I thought for sure that the people who participate in this forum would have gone out to enjoy the fresh snow by now and would have posted raving reports.

I think that the temps/wind chills may also have frightened people. I was actually surprised how comfy I was able to stay outside for nearly 2 hrs at a time. The activated charcoal 'Toe/Hand Warmers' make all the difference. $2 investment made it possible to stay out for six runs with slow lift rides. The only part that got cold was near the 'leaks' that occur between my goggles/helmet during the windiest part of the lift ride.

Me too...just bought a new North Face summit series Guidelite jacket and it performed flawlessly. Love the attached hood, I'll never ski without this kind of hood again. Stayed out in the blizzard conditions for 3 hours from 1-4pm and never took a break.

It was amazing how fast and hard the snow was falling!
 
admittedly i did get small patches of frostbite on each cheek but that was operator error. it was cold on saturday and cold & windy on sunday but i thought if you dressed properly weather was a non-factor. i think we rode the gondi at k only 3 times all weekend. it was -8 sat morn yet we did laps off the supe chair to access the newly blown ovation. also did laps off of other cold lifts like the canyon & slowden quads both days. it didn't start snowing at k on saturday until lift close. shame on those who stayed away because of the weather.

Beautiful sunny but cold day at Sugarloaf, 1" snow from the storm. Groomers in good shape, everything else sucks. Please send snow.
 
Saturday Jay report to come this afternoon :) . Only 1-3 inches of wind blown here in Northern VT so I spent Sunday dreaming of what the 30" in Boston would look like in my front yard. :cry:

Ya know. I did take my first face shot of the year this weekend. Unfortunately it was in my car on a back road near where I ski. There was a 3 foot drift across the middle of the road and I blew through it at about 25 mph. All I could see for a minute was a huge snow blast over the windshield, I hit the wipers, and then the road was there again. On skis I only got in to a little over my knees. My car had it better.
 
the reports about not driving were not exagerating in regards to boston based skiers. it really was too bad to drive sunday morning, this coming from a die hard watching three feet of snow fall and doing nothing all day but dreaming about where i wanted to be. salem got rocked the hardest with 3 feet. 3 feet! plus the blizzard conditions really didn't stop until well afternoon time along the coast. it seriously was as bad as they said it was and it definitely stopped the boston area folks from getting out. the rest of southern new england with 2 feet or less has no excuse though! :lol:

True enough.....just depends on what you call the goods. I had drifts over the top of my truck (7'). And a good portion of the 20' waves were rolling down the street. Needless to say, driving was not an option.

But with the wind howling and chest deeps drifts to contend with, breaking trail in the local woods and golf courses had the feel of the far north. A few of my buddies paddled out on Monday as the swell started to clean up a bit, but I let them have the 38 degree water to themselves, and opted for more turns in the town forrest. The blazing sun gave way to a stellar sunset, which gave way to a crystal clear full moon. The windrifts took on a lunar look in the blue moonshine. An occasional face shot was scored when you could find a steep enough slope in the rolling trails.
 
Sunday there was no need to go anywhere there was so much snow right at home...we skied for 2 hours breaking knee deep trail and through deeper drifts. We skied 350 vertical feet, kick and glide on our 400+ acres of forested hill top and rolling meadows.

I'm still thawing out from my weekend at Tremblant. It was @#$#%% cold. I never saw the thermomotor even close to postive numbers. It got to minus -40 at one point. They were reporting -61 windchill at the top. Skiing was marginal at best. On Sat morning we were able to get some fresh tracks on a couple narrow bump runs thru the tress from the 4" they had from Wed, but that was about it. I do have to give them props for there snowmaking.....but not what I was looking for.
 
OK guys. Stop it. You're killing me. I'm from Montreal and have'nt seen real snow (powder) for 3 weeks. Need help... From what I can understand the Boston area got hit the worse, but I can live with 2 feet elsewhere. No one got to it on sunday, so in theory it will still be there saturday.

What would be my best bet for sat jan 28 (my birthday to boot)? Don't care where or how high the vert drop is. Only want 2 things : glades and powder and hopefully low skier traffic.

So hit me with your best suggestions...

If I was going to travel this weekend to find good snow in the glades, I would recommend Killington, Sugarbush or even Mt Snow. Mt Snow got more snow than the other areas (b/c the storm center was further south) and they have nice low angle glades that would hold snow nicely.

Since you are coming from the north, Mt Snow may not be a great option as it is much further, but I think you'll find some nice skiing at Sugarbush and Mad River Glen (if you are not a snowboarder) as well.

Gore Mtn in NY has some good snow too, and 4 official glades are open there.

At nearly all of these places, in the glades, you will find all kinds of obstacles and potential core shots lurk. The base was not substantial even though there was a lot of snow in the last 2 weeks. The snow was very light and doesn't cover up these things very well. Just be careful and I'd recommend not using your brand new skis in the glades.

Just catching up after a few days off. I was definately out skiing on Saturday, however we really didn't get anything North of the Border expect the -28c ski lessons with my daughter at Edelweiss.

Got out of town and skiied Ste.Anne (near Quebec City) on Monday and Mad on Tuesday.

Sharon is right regarding the conditions in the woods. I would say leaving from MTL, the best options would be Kmart, Sbush, MRG, Stowe, Smuggs and Jay. We had some nice powder skiing at MRG on Tuesday. However I believe that many of these places would still need MORE snow to be conditions perfect without any surprises.
 
I had to work, 8am Sat to 8am Sunday. The chains went on the trucks at 17:00. The ride home Sunday up 128 was surreal. 50' visability, anywhere from 6" to 2-3' drifts. 4WD Low the whole way home.

Back to work at 18:00 on Sunday night and there until almost 20:00 on Monday. Fortunately, most people in the area stayed home. It was quite the storm.We did have two deaths Monday morning, but I don't think they could really be attributed to the storm. Monday was spent digging out hydrants.

Stowe on Tuesday. MRG on Wednesday. I can't complain

I got out around 2:30 pm on Sat. the 22nd, about 30 minutes after the leading edge of the snowfall arrived in Albany...and it was coming down fast. I headed west right into it...driving positively sucked, and I reached Cleveland around 1 or 2 in the morning. Made Omaha the following night, and pulled into SLC around 2:30 am on the 3rd day. Been unpacking since then, but made it to Snowbird today for some turns.
