I canceled a two day trip to Whiteface, due to the thaw. I decided not to cancel my vacation days. I went to Greek yesterday, the conditions were horrendous. I spent all of my time there in the bar watching the hill. I was hopeful the sheets of falling slush would change over to snow during the day , they did not. There was a two hour period where there was one single skier on the hill. We would watch him come down the hill and wonder if he had had enough every trip down. I met the man today and wanted to buy him a beer, alas he is a teetotaler like myself. I shook his hand, he told me he was on vacation and had no choice. They shut the hill down at 5:30. The excuse was wind, the fact was no one was on the hill.
I made it to the hill today right at opening. I was expecting several inches of fresh overnight. Much to my surprise, there was six inches on top of the hill. Better yet, due to the wind, the mogul field on Elysian Fields had been completely filled in. I hit a buried trough that held at least knee deep. It stopped me in my tracks. I fell over and just laughed, is this really Greek Peak? It was a lot of fun, but the snow was quite heavy and took me some getting used to. I thought I had it dialed in when I was cruising the Meadows, hopping up and down on my skis feeling the rebound of the skis against the fresh snow. I hit a ditch that runs across the field, I got my weight a little forward and when I landed my tips dove, I was ejected forward sans skis. I landed flat on my chest. I almost knocked the wind out of myself, I felt a little queezy when I got up. I have a reconstructed acl in my right knee. I tweeked it when the bindings released. I skied for hours afterwords and felt fine, we'll see how it feels tomorrow morning. I am going to New Mexico in two weeks I hope I didn't F up my plans.
