Friday the 13th at Greek Peak, good and bad luck

I canceled a two day trip to Whiteface, due to the thaw. I decided not to cancel my vacation days. I went to Greek yesterday, the conditions were horrendous. I spent all of my time there in the bar watching the hill. I was hopeful the sheets of falling slush would change over to snow during the day , they did not. There was a two hour period where there was one single skier on the hill. We would watch him come down the hill and wonder if he had had enough every trip down. I met the man today and wanted to buy him a beer, alas he is a teetotaler like myself. I shook his hand, he told me he was on vacation and had no choice. They shut the hill down at 5:30. The excuse was wind, the fact was no one was on the hill.

I made it to the hill today right at opening. I was expecting several inches of fresh overnight. Much to my surprise, there was six inches on top of the hill. Better yet, due to the wind, the mogul field on Elysian Fields had been completely filled in. I hit a buried trough that held at least knee deep. It stopped me in my tracks. I fell over and just laughed, is this really Greek Peak? It was a lot of fun, but the snow was quite heavy and took me some getting used to. I thought I had it dialed in when I was cruising the Meadows, hopping up and down on my skis feeling the rebound of the skis against the fresh snow. I hit a ditch that runs across the field, I got my weight a little forward and when I landed my tips dove, I was ejected forward sans skis. I landed flat on my chest. I almost knocked the wind out of myself, I felt a little queezy when I got up. I have a reconstructed acl in my right knee. I tweeked it when the bindings released. I skied for hours afterwords and felt fine, we'll see how it feels tomorrow morning. I am going to New Mexico in two weeks I hope I didn't F up my plans.

Those pix from yesterday don't look bad at all. GP has its moments.

I am going to New Mexico in two weeks I hope I didn't F up my plans.
I just put a bunch of New Mexico TRs in the western forum if you want to see what things look like out here.

Wow, I saw they got 3" of snow, and didn't think much of it. Just couldn't bring myself to ride the slow lifts and ski what I thought would be marginal conditions. I'm just not ready for Greek Peak yet. But if we get some snow this week, that may turn around. Looks much better than I had imagined. Probably was better than Whiteface.

I went looking for snow in the high hills outside of Ithaca with Pam and the dogs, and much to our surprise, we found 3-4" of powder on top of a bomber base and the skiing turned out to be excellent, far exceeding our expectations.

I was apprehensive to check Whiteface's trail report when I got home, I thought they might have gotten dumped on by the same storm, they got only two inches. My friend who was going to go with me complained about the conditions at Greek last Sunday. I thought they were O.K. The lifties told me I was the only one who thought so. I guess when you ski the same hill day after day, any change is appreciated. I bet my buddy wouldn't have cared for 3,000ft of two inches atop boilerplate. Me either. I told him we'd go in the Spring, when you can put all that vert to good use. I've never been in the Spring, if the snow is right it must be sublime.

When we first planned the trip, I wanted to do Gore one day, Whiteface the next. The price with season pass discount, Gore $61, Whiteface $35. I can remember skiing Gore on a Good Friday a few years back for $18 with the discount. Why, if both of these hills are owned by the state, is there such a disparity in pricing? In the past I would just as soon stay at Gore than add 120 miles to my trip to get to Whiteface. Hence I've been to Gore maybe 15 times, Whiteface 3. Now I feel compelled to bypass Gore for Whiteface unless conditions warrant otherwise.

I talked to GP's marketing director about that. He says he just calls each mountain and they tell him what they'll give. I think WF gives a better discount because it is a less busy mountain, so they would like to lure people up there. Gore gets more visitors so they don't feel they need to offer as good a discount.

I talked to a few other people who were at GP yesterday and they said it was good too and they are heading up there today. I'm just not sure I'm up for it yet. It just seems so unexciting to me (hmmm, wonder why). I may just go back out to the state forest again today. It really was nice and the dogs loved it.

I met someone today who told me that Gore and Whiteface will honor each others lift tickets. If this is the case, I can do Whiteface first, buy a pass for two days and redeem the second day's pass at Gore. Hope it works, sounds like a good idea, especially if the conditions aren't so hot at Whiteface. If it doesn't, I'll miss Gore. I just can't see spending almost double for Gore.

Cornhead,

You can buy one lift ticket at a time for $35 at Whiteface using your Greek Peak pass. So, if you want to ski at Gore, then you need to buy your pass that morning at Whiteface.

If you buy a 2-day pass you will pay $144...no savings.

If they let you by a 2-day pass for $70...let me know...that would be great, but I doubt they will do that.
