Gulf of Slides this weekend

I'd like to get up there this weekend, for this is likely to be my only free weekend before it's too late to be worth it. Is anyone interested in hooking up for the assault?

On a separate note, has anyone seen first hand what it looks like lately?

There's a fairly large group from Hunter heading up for a long weekend, but they're camping at the Hermit Lake shelters so you'd have to touch base with them before they leave on Wednesday to arrange a meeting place. I can facilitate contact if there is interest. I can't get the weekday time off of work or I would be with them, and my plans to go for this weekend may be trashed by my 2 son's travel soccer schedule (3 games in 2 days). I'm still holding out hope I can go and would appreciate a driving partner for the drive, but my chances of being able to go are 30% at best.

Can't much help with the driving - I'l be using a 2-seater with the passenger seat filled with gear that doesn't fit in the shoebox-sized trunk - but a climbing and skiing partner is a must for both company and safety. There would be no reason for your GOS buds to trudge all the way over from Hermit Lake when they're right on the doorstep of Tucks.

Anyone else? NHPH? Lftgly? CD? Frankie?

Sorry Marc, I don't have the equipment necessary for Gulf Of Slides and even though I look for an attempt to Mt Washington next week, I think it would be dangerous for me to not head to Tucks.

As the Gulf of Slides Ski Trail is no longer skiable, there's no equipment for GOS that's different than equipment for Tuckerman. Even if the GOS Ski Trail was covered, which it isn't, you could rent snowshoes in North Conway for only a couple of dollars per day. Snowboarders regularly ascend the GOS Ski Trail via snowshoes, it's just postholing that's a no-no. I'd have to snowshoe as well if there was snow on the GOS Ski Trail as my AT setup isn't yet complete (I'm working on it, though - I've got Völkl Explosivs on order and I'm shopping around for a deal on Fritchis, AT boots and skins even as we speak).

As for it being dangerous, GOS is much less steep than Tuckerman, not to mention that it's not filled with yahoos like Tucks is.

If you're going to Mt W. this weekend, come along to GOS and avoid the insanity of a spring weekend in Tucks. Click here for a photo tour of GOS, albeit with a lot more snow.

Chances for wet slides are not high actually ?

Thanks for the link, but according to the pics of Lftgly of 2 weeks ago (or so), I guess it's not much skiable anymore except some little parts.

Not really my kind of trip sorry. (especially driving 4h with sleeping in a motel once on that and driving 500 miles to hike 10 miles to reach a 300' high gully still skiable...) In july yes, in april no.

+ Anyway, I have an extremely important course at school on saturday morning, so it's only sat night/sunday that I *could* come.

So thanks for the invite, but unfortunately, there is no chances to see me at the GOS this weekend. I guess you'll have an excellent day over there, but the risk + complications don't worth the trip for me, sorry.

Marc, just reading all this has gotten the odds up to 40%. I'm all set with gear including AT and even crampons. You know, we could hook up and take my truck/SUV/gas guzzler up to share driving. And Frank, Marc is right about not needing anything different for GOS as opposed to Tucks.
Still slim odds I can go because I would have to disappoint my 2 little boys to do so, but the daydreaming certainly helps pass this beautiful day!

And in any event, the quality of the entire experience is much more important than the statistics. Really, you literally don't know what you're missing.

And JimG, it doesn't make much sense for you to come this way, anyway, if my guess on your location in downstate NY or N NJ is correct. Just keep those percentages rising!

I haven't any firm plans, but I'll be hiking to ski somewhere, so I'll check in later this week, or email me offline.

Gulf of Slides is still quite skiable. The gullies in GOS offer as much vertical as is left in Tucks (except maybe Hillmans), without the spectacle.

Frank, I understand why you must ski the Bowl first. Probably far greater falling ice danger and undermined-snow/crevasse danger in Tucks than GOS. Also far more sport-bra tops, beer-drinking, and spectacular yardsale falls.

You gotta see it to believe it. That "scene" is the inspiration for the whole TFT mind-set.

One way or the other, I hope you make it down (and Mark makes it up!).

I'm sure the glade #4 will be skiable without problem T2B until may This is steep like Mt Washington and still a good 800' high.

Anyway, let me see over this week. At least, 2 of my 3 usual ski buddies can't ski this weekend, so there is a little chance..... even though I would prefer to go 2 days in a row to ski GOS and Tucks on monday. Damn Study to do !

Yeah, it makes no sense for you to go by way of Albany, for as many an esteemed Mainer has said, "Ya cahn't get theah from heah." There are no decent ways to traverse northern New England from here - the route to Gorham or N Conway is almost entirely on back roads. You could easily do an I-84/I-495/I-95/NH 16 combo to the Mt. Washington Valley.

Wait a minute! It just dawned on me who "JimG" is. Mr. Plattekill Video, if my instincts don't fail me. Nice to see ya here, Jim...now I'm even more inspired to get you to keep working on those odds.

Frankontour wrote:

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
even though I would prefer to go 2 days in a row to ski GOS and Tucks on monday.<!-/Quote-!>

Well, why not reverse those? If I don't overdo it on Saturday I could be talked into braving the crazies at Tuckerman on Sunday, which would be less of a zoo than it would be on Saturday. Besides, by going to Tucks on Monday you'll miss out on the whole "scene" that Lftgly is talking about.

The problem is that I can't take 2 days off this week unfortunately. From the top of the slides (is it accessible via the gullies anyway ?) to reach the top of Tuckerman Ravine or Hillman's ?

Would be cool to do a mix, if it is possible !?

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
Would be cool to do a mix, if it is possible !?<!-/Quote-!>

Logistically, doing so would be quite simple as the two ravines are separated only by Boott Spur, from which Hillmans descends, but it's far preferable to see on the way up what you're going to ski on the way down, especially for a first-timer up there.

Yeah, you're right about it. For this reason, I would more try Hillman's rather than Tucks.

I guess Hillman's is *enough safe* actually to ski it before to have hiked it ?

Yeah, I've been lurking here ever since we hooked up for that banner POW day Marc, but with the season rapidly coming to a close I guess I'm just a chatterbox today! Besides, this seems like a good group and I've gotten alot of good info/pics and especially good Presidentials info here. Although I'm working on it, don't get your hopes up too high because (arrrrgggghhhh!) as slim as the odds are I think they are more wishful thinking than reality.

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
with the season rapidly coming to a close I guess I'm just a chatterbox today!<!-/Quote-!>

That was the case with all of the regulars last summer. It seems that there's no time to talk about skiing when you're too busy skiing.

And yes, Frank, if there's any route in/near Tucks that I'd consider skiing without seeing it first, it's Hillman's. I still would advise against it, however. I'm just not one to heed my own advice.

Exactly what I'm thinking about since a week Marc. We seem to be extremely more active when we're less on the slopes !

It's tough to see the end of the season over here, though. Since the mid-march, I've skied twice in the Saguenay, twice in Beauce, once in Charlevoix, once in powder in the townships and once in the closed ski areas of the region. It's a chance that I did this last hike & ski day, cause if not I would be traumatised, heading up north to see what snow remains on the slopes !

In another sense, I now know for the next years where to ski some glades in may

Yeah, for Hillman's, it's still far, but it could be a very interesting mix... with possible exit with the lower snowfield to reach Tucks for a little run down Left Gully or so
