NHPH queried, and then lamented:

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
Whats yer plan?My set days off(for now) are friday and saturday.I'd love to hook up if my ex decides she's going to be mom this w/e.<!-/Quote-!>

I can't be taking any time off this week or next, so I have to be working with Saturday/Sunday. That, however, leaves the planets to align on Saturday. My tentative plan is for GOS on Saturday, then maybe...maybe...ski Tucks on Sunday if I somehow have a shred of energy remaining. At 38 I ain't gettin' any younger, and there are those pesky cancer sticks, so I may well be comatose in the Royalty Motel in Gorham until, oh, about 2:30 pm on Sunday or so. I wonder if they arrange late checkouts?

Marc and Lftgly, check out this link:

http://www.mountwashington.org/cam/network/ravines.php

Has alot of excellent closeup shots from many angles.

Thanks JimG.

I was wondering about posting it here.

You know, this is the "secret link" on Time For Tuckerman, that we swore to never say out of the TMC club chat room ;)

In fact, I think that to have access to this link, you must be a donator for the MtWashington.org organization... so we're afraid that if there is too much people outside the donators that see the link, that they change the address. (so we should make a collection in FTO to be some donators and re-get access to the link )

I use this link for something like 6 months now, It's incredible to have all those webcams available

Honestly, yesterday, the chances of seeing me on the trip went down... for personnal reasons...

It looks better this morning

Frank, I think we can trust those who visit here to be discreet and not go crazy passing the link to others. Let's hope so anyway!

Jim, send me a backchannel email because I don't have your address (just click on my name). Remember Dan Barron, the telemarker from Manhattan who was with us at Plattekill? He's looking for someone with whom to potentially share the ride to GOS this weekend.

I've spent the entire day calling all over the Northeast looking for a pair of beefy AT boots -- Garmont G-Rides or Mega Rides, or Scarpa Denalis. I just finally found a pair of G-Rides in my size at an acceptable (but still not cheap) price at Climb High in Burlington. I won't have the skis or bindings in time for this weekend, but those boots are DIN compatible so I'm planning to try them out this weekend with alpine skis and bindings at GOS. I'll travel to Gorham via Burlington (ugh!) Friday evening to try them on and likely purchase them.

E-mail sent; you're a real trooper going up to Burlington to get those boots and then driving to Gorham! Those G-rides are good boots, but even though they are beefy for AT boots they are still alot softer than regular alpine boots. I have the Scarpa Lasers which are alot softer than the Denali's; I need to ski them for a day to get balanced on them before attempting anything hairy, so I'll be using alpine gear if I can make it.

Actually, I'm ditching the plans to pick up the G-Rides. After chatting with Garmont and discussing their product offerings I'm holding off until this fall and picking up a pair of the new Garmont Adrenalines. I'm working up an item for our Ski News section on the product, but it's a new boot scheduled for next season's debut that reportedly will be twice as stiff as the G-Rides -- according to accounts, the first AT boot to equal the downhill performance of an alpine boot. Furthermore, via 11 screws on the bottom you swap out one of two interchangeable soles depending upon the type of bindings that you're using, a vibram sole for AT bindings or a DIN plate sole for alpine bindings.

I'm also in line for a pair of the new Silvretta Pure bindings that will weigh in at a feathery 1200 grams per pair, yet will have full DIN releasability up to 10. I may still pick up a pair of Naxos that I have my eye on, though. The only tough decision will be whether to mount the Naxos on the new Völkl CMH Edition Explosivs that I have coming, or to allow them to sit unmounted all summer and wait to put the Pures on them. The Völkls are one mega-heavy ski, so I think that every ounce that I can shave off the bindings (the difference will be nearly 2 pounds between the Pures and the Naxos) will be to good use. Then again, it might make more sense to put the heavy Naxos on the heavy Explosivs for near-bounds skiing, and mount the Pures on a light-but-super-wide BC ski (maybe the Karhu Jak BC) for the ultimate backcountry kit.

Gawd, this thread has digressed! Maybe I'll replicate this post to start a new thread once I get that news item done.

AAARGGHHH, lost a message!!!

As I was reading this with a slight headache and aches in my neck and back (see Tremblant for the story). I am still hoping that I will be okay to ski at Sunday River (or elsewhere) on May 1st. If my body feels okay, then I might even go to Tucks on the 2nd as planned.

Picked-up on Toyota Echo rental while the Mazda on Winter tires (wishful thinking) is still in the shop (they are waiting for the insurance before starting the work). Regarding Winter tires, the last time I skied MayMania at Sunday River (2000?), it started snowing all day and that evening it took us 5 hours to get back to Montreal on unplowed roads instead on the normal 3hr it usual takes. Cars and Trucks were sliddng all over the places, they couldn't get up the tiny hill on the road. I was real happy to have my Winter tires.

Okay, back to the Main topic:

I am reading Marc taking equipment for a possible trip to GOS, I was wondering (prior to the accident) which skis I was going to bring to Tuck. The last two trips (1999 and 2001) I had my old Rossi 4S (207cm), however these skis don't have much edges left to say the least. Mind you the last time we skiied the Sherburne trail with was 100% opened on April 27(?) with some walking required. We skiied it from Hermit Lake to the parking lot bridge at Pinkham Notch without removing our skis. We arrived 30 minutes ahead of my wife (she was removing her skis - she's the smart one).

So her the debate, which skis should I bring (hoping I'll be in better sharp then)?

a) rock skis (4Ss are in better shape that the newer 7S (201) which I lost an edge last May.

b) Straight Stiff Ski: FELS 202cm.

c) Atomic 10:22 (183) - PureGS skis which I've skied Europe last year.

d) Atomic SL11 (157) - Pure Slalom ski - only used them (so far) on icy growned runs.

I am leaning toward my old 4S rock skis even if the Sherburne will probably not be skiable in two weeks (1/3 now). The Atomic are much larger, not sure if they would fit on the side of the backpack?

Any opinions?

Patrick, bring your lightest and shortest skis with you. I wouldn't worry about the Sherburne trail in 2 weeks either, you'll be hiking back down no matter what, so it would be nice to bring skis with decent edges too as Tucks weather can change and become icy in a short period of time.

Hope you feel better soon; getting your bell rung like that is never pleasant.

I'm still puting the pressure on the ex.If she takes my son i'm in.I'd say 70% likely right now.I should get a commitment today sometime.
((*
*))NHPH

I guess being married or divorced, it still comes down to the other half!

JimG., about the skis, the gut feeling would be the Atomic 10.22 (the sidecut from the SL11 is too radical for Tucks - especially if I don't know them that much). The problem is that the Atomic might be shorter, but there aren't necessarly lighter with the bindings and probably not practical on the backpack.

The perfect choice would be the Rossi B1s demo I tried last month, but that not going to be this year. Anyway, the odds of me being okay in 10 days don't seem to be improving.

Patrick, if it makes you feel any better, I'm not sure the snow is going to hold out in any worthwhile way after this weekend. It is really going fast!

Marc, the ex-wife has decided she is going to be a mom on saturday! If ya still want a climbing partner let me know here and/or NHpowderhound@iskijay.com

((*
*))NHPH

Cool beans! I'll backchannel you as the plans gel...I'll definitely be there, there are others possibly joining us. Once I've got a headcount I'll be making motel reservations for us out-of-towners, likely in Gorham.

Gorham is much cheaper to stay at,not to mention closer. The Town and Country is a nice place with a pool, jacz, and a real good restraunt. The room rates are very reasonable.
((*
*))NHPH
