How many mountains have you skied?

Good question for Les Menuires... I think it's possible (Patrick and Marc are better to answer this than me). I'm at the end of my break, so I don't have time to find a trail map

Skiing northern than Mt Washington, in the Presidentials... hmm, not sure. In the book of David Goodman on backcountry skiing in NH/ME, the northest point is Great Gulf.

I'm not familiar with Tioga Pass and Virginia Lakes...

Ski area counts:
As long as they are distinct areas, I count each one of them.

Example: Sugarbush is 1 now. If I would've been there prior to the merger I would count the place as 2. However, I don't know if I would still continued counting Glen Ellen as seperate once they merged.

For Faustin, I never counted it because since I didn't keep stats when they were two seperate areas. However, I would've counted Mt.Faustin seperately back then. An important factor is where did you buy your lift ticket.

If St-Sauveur would overtake Avila (not only ownership) and everything would become MSS then that would be counted as MSS area regardless if I ski the Avila side only or not. It would be the same reasoning as presently not counting Cote 68, 69, 70 and 71 as seperately, not as seperate as they were fifty years ago. If the ski area changes name, it is not a different ski area. (Alta=Mt. Chevreuil).

As for Mt.Washington, it is counted as one regardless if it's Hillman's Highway, Tucks, Gulf of Slides or the Great Gulf (never made it to the last two). Tony, Great Gulf is on Mt.Washington.

Counting Examples for Europe and 3 Vallées:
Les Trois Vallées is 4 ski areas located in Three Valleys. You are right Tony, Les Menuires is down valley from Val Thorens. Last year I skiied 9 new areas, all in Europe.

I counted 4 in Les 3V, of course, you have to ski each one of them. In the Jungfrau Area, I skiied 2 ski areas although I could've made it to 3.

In Chamonix, I counted Brévent/Flégère as 1, although they were once seperate areas. The main reason is that now they are considered as one.

Whistler/Blackcomb are 2.

Ski areas like this screw up some counts when you sum up total skidays at each area. Example, I spent 6 days in les 3V. Skiied Val-Thorens 6 times; Meribel 3; Les Menuires and Courchevel 2 times each. Total ski days per mountain is 13 for 6 ski days.

Here is my breakdown for areas skied in New england:

Vermont:

1) Killington
2) Pico Peak
3) Okemo
4) Magic Mtn
5) Stratton
6) Mt Snow/ Haystack
7) Quechee Lakes-Private
8) Bromley
9) Suicide Six
10) Sugarbush
11) Middlebury Snow Bowl
12) Jay
13) Burke
14) Mad River Glen
15) Ascutney
16) Smugglers Notch

New Hampshire:

1) Gunstock
2) Loon
3) Waterville Valley
4) Attitash
5) Wildcat
6) Cannon
7) Mt Sunapee

Maine:

1) Big Squaw
2) Saddleback
3) Sugarloaf
4) Sunday River

Massachusetts:

1) Jimminy Peak
2) Brodie
3) Bosquet
4) Otis Ridge
5) Catamount
6) Berkshire East
7) Wachusett
8) Butternut
9) Nashoba Valley
10) Ski Bradford
11) Mt Tom- Closed

Rhode Island: easy

1) Yagoo Valley

Connecticut:

1) Mowhawk Mtn
2) Mt Southington
3) Powder Ridge
4) Woodbury
5) Ski Sundown

So my list in New England is actually at 44 if you chose to count Catamount which is located in both New York and Massachusetts.

Patrick : Avila. For me, it depends a lot of my history in the resorts. Mt Avila is all my life, for skiing, so even though it would become MSS all the way, I would consider it like Mt Avila forever.

Anyway, with the 4-seasons resort that is Avila, they couldn't make it MSS all the way. It's just too separated.

Kevin : Just BTW, Brodie is closed now, too...

And, if you're looking for a 3 Valleys trail map, you'll find one here.

The "two areas in one day" problem is easily resolved by counting each as a half day. That's why some of my day totals like Whistler are fractional. This was tricky to program, and if I ever visit Trois Vallees I may have a new programming challenge.

Tony, it's easy, if you hit the 3 Vallées... Considering you spend at least 4 days, you ski a single ski area in one day. Doing so, you spend less time in transfering of valley ;) (hehe, not sure if I would do that anyway.)

Hey Troller, where are located your 20 ski areas ? (I'm a bit curious of where you ski, as I saw you often on T4T although I never saw a msg from you.)

Skiing only one valley a day in les Trois Vallées might be harder to do unless you stay outside the resorts like in Moutiers and drive to a different base everyday. If you are in Val Thorens like I was (or Courchevel like Marc) which are the resort on the extremities you will always find yourself skiing a few runs in Meribel in you are crossing headed to Courchevel (or Val Tho in Marc's case). Each areas are only seperated by a ridge.

The last time we skiied in Val d'Isere/Tignes we always parked in Val d'Isère even when we concentrated our skiing in Tignes. We stayed 30km downvalley. This was counted as two resorts in one day because we had to ski Val d'Isère runs and take their lifts to reach Tignes.

As for fractions in the counts, I never used them. My total ski days are enterily independent to ski areas counts.

Skiing seperate areas is definately easier in Whistler. There we would ski Whistler one day and Blackcomb the next, we would neevr cross over.

I see the kind !

Me too, a ski day is not related with the number of mountains skied. It's the opposite for hiking in summer, where I count the mountains hiked.

So when I ski Avila / Saint-Sauveur, I count it like a day at St-Sauveur, except if I do 90% of my runs on the Avila side (it never happened anyway). So for Avila, my count is only the times I exclusively skied Avila and I also count, on a different column the total number of times, for the times I skied both mountains in the same day.

On my hike & ski days of april, I was only counting the ski area where I skied the more vertical. (ex : La Réserve for the Ski & Hike Fest of april 25). I didn't count as skied the 3 other ski areas where I went, but I take notes of the fact I skied them, of course !

Great score, Marc !

I said them in other threads, but here are my ski areas, classified by vertical ranges, as we were talking of our little ski areas in another discussion. I almost forgot these two ski areas:

1)Campgaw-New Jersey
2)Belleayre Mtn-New York

This makes my total 92 Ski Areas.

Wow, 92 at 31...
do you expect to reach the 100 next season ?
(goin' back to school works... arghh 7h45 sunday morning)

Make it 94 as I forgot two ski areas in PA:

1)Elk Mountain
2)Ski Montage

I would like to ski more places this winter, but I
will mostly be skiing with my 4 year old son, so the ski areas have to be kid friendly. I would like to try to ski these resorts this season:

1)Orange County Ski Center-NY
2)Scotch Valley-NY (I do not know if this is open)
3)Ski Blandford-MA
4)Bolton Valley-VT (Still open?)
5)Cochran-VT

If I can Ski Bolton Valley and Cochran this winter then I will have skied every resort in vermont except for Maple Valley which has been opening and closing for the past several years, and Bear Mt resort, which is private.

Yep, I just checked on the BV website and they look to be open.

I think that Maple Valley is definitively closed (but who knows ?)

I understand what you mean, for skiing with your son... Killington is not necessary the best place for him ;)

Thanks for the info regarding Scotch Valley, I called the telephone # for the ski area and it is not in service. I had heard that there were plans to re-open this area? Regarding Maple Valley in Vermont, the resort is listed on a Vermont ski area association website as still being operational, and expecting a mid-December opening date for this year. In the past I have driven by this ski area on the way home from Stratton or Magic, and the mountain had been closed. I would like to try this place this year before they go out for good, with over 1000 vertical, it looked interesting from the road. As soon as the season starts here in sounthern New England and New York, I will post conditions from some of these smaller places that I ski during the winter. They may not be as interesting as the resorts up north,
but at least it will add some variety to the reports.

Good Kevin !

I think it's a great thing to have a diversity in the reports, cause if it's always the same mountains, it can become less interesting, although I never got this problem on FTO.

For Maple Valley, I think their biggest problem is their elevation. The base at something like 200' over the sea. Their ski season should be quite short ! Good if it is open this year !
