Hey... after seeing the video on the other thread, my wish list just changed. Mt Plante now pass on #4... and honestly, it's not far from the #1 !

Great score Patrick... I have a long way to go before to have skied 72 ski areas ;)

I did not know there were so many places to ski in Canada! I'm going to try to get north of the border more often. From where I live though, it's a 9 hour drive to Tremblant.

Ouch, 9 hours is quite far effectively ! The townships are surely less far from where you live than Tremblant, though ! (2-3 hours less)

There may be 20-25 ski areas that I would like to try in Quebec, if I lived in New England.

I wouldn't drive more than 2 hours for most of the Quebec ski areas on my list. For example, I never made it further South than Killington not because the mountains were not worth it for say, but the mountains might not be so interesting with a longer drive was definately not be worth it. Example, I wouldn't drive through Vermont to ski Massachusetts.

In my opinion, the same might apply for most ski areas in Quebec. Outside a hour drive, I have concentrated on the cream of the cropt. Thus only a few ski areas in New England.

Quebec alone has at least 75 ski areas (can't remember the exact number I saw in FTO, it was a 110 25 yr ago).

More 85 than 75.
There is some very interesting far in the regions, on the 20-25 I was talking about ;) (like the Vali, Édouard, Val D'irène, Adstock, etc).

I would seriously be ready to drive to those ski areas, when I'll have more time and more $$

course time !

With about the same annual skier visits as Quebec, California only has about 25 ski areas. I have skied 19 of them.

Yeah... it's normal, as winter in California doesn't necessary need snow ;)

Here, in winter, we had no choice, in the early 20th century. It was to pass the days indoor doing nothing or to take advantage of the cold season. So, there is hundreds of ski areas that have been built and if only the biggest ones are still in operation today, they're very concentrated and in some places, all the mountains seem to have their ski area (check the Laurentians !!) This is why there is so much little ski areas, but I'm sure that 80+% of the ski days in the province take place in less than 15-20 ski areas. (Just Tremblant and Bromont represent alone close to 25% of the ski-visits)

The way you feel about driving south of Kmart is about how I feel about driving north of the border. From Southern New England I drive about 4 hours for Kmart and about 6 for Jay Peak. A little more than half way to Tremblant is Whiteface in NY. If I'm passing by 12-1500ft vertical areas within a couple of hours of home - why drive past the biggies for shorter runs.

What are the best Canadian areas within say a 2-hour drive of Jay Peak? When I'm up there this winter I will venture north... if you can convince me it is worth while.

Tell me what is your kind of skiing and I will try to convince you

I love Castlerock at Sugarbush, the single chair at Mad River, the trees at Jay Peak... I love the bowls at Squaw Valley... all of Taos..Alta...I love driving up Little Cottonwood Canyon and craning my neck up to the intimidating steeps that crown Snowbird

I guess my favorite is anything natural and not groomed. However, these days I'm most often skiing with my 10-year old son and he likes fast groomers.

I like ski areas that are small mom & pop type places with killer terrain stashed away that go unnoticed by the throngs flocking to the majors. But I also like the variety, vertical and high speed lift systems the the big guys offer.

Sorry. I guess that doesn't narrow it down too much!

I had an idea (I'm already "sold" for them I guess) before you gave your preferences, but now, I have a serious idea : Orford... and I don't think that a lot of persons on this website will disagree... unless they didn't ski the place in the last 7-8 years.

- Orford is at 1h north from Jay Peak
- I personnaly know few Vermont skiers that prefer Orford to Jay Peak, for the glades and the natural terrain.
- Personnaly, I prefer Orford to both Jay Peak and MRG and I love the same terrain than you.
- 1772' high, although the max vertical possible on 1 run is 1615'
- 54 trails (and tons of unmarked glades)
- 1 new High Speed Chondola : Mix of Gondola and six-seater high speed chairlift.
- One of the best official glade networks in the East and some of the best glades simply.
- "Frankontour" comes from "Contour" : the best trail in the province IMO.
See some pics of that gem on this address : http://www.firsttracksonline.com/discus ... 1061517275

(it was my photo trip at Orford last year. All the pics except the first one on top and the last one of the thread were taken in "Contour". I could have posted 50+ incredibly nice pics from that day.)

Before Marc send it, here is the report of his first day at the mountain in january 2000. Notice that it was a bad snow year and it's also why it's better to ski it in february, when there is a good snowdepth in the woods.

http://www.firsttracksonline.com/orford.htm

- Your son like fast groomers : Maxi, Magnum, Sherbrooke, Trois-Ruisseaux. Maxi in particular is a very long steep groomed trail and right beside, the "Super" have never been dynamited, so it's cliffs over cliffs over cliffs from top to mid-mountain, but all is skiable, bumped, often with powder, and it's one of the most interesting challenge in the east, especially the top. So he can ski the Maxi while you're surviving the Super ! (I don't think they touched to Super, to make the new lift this summer)

The best time to go is late february. Until last year (new lift), it was correct in early march, even with the holiday week. Now that there is the new lift, I don't know if the powder will remain as long as usually in the glades, but if they don't open too often the triple chairlift beside, it should be about the same crowd on the trails than in the last years.

Secret glades and powder stashes. There is a lot of glade maniacs at Orford, that is very sure, but there is some possibilities less known than the Chevreuil and ZigZag which are just like some official trails. I could give you backchannel few spots, but I wouldn't on the whole list, you know why Try the Giroux side official glades... they're really uncrowded, compared to the main mountain ones and 4 of the 6 are in my best trails ever.

Steeps : If the Super is not enough for you (50 degrees on top), you can try the chutes of Mt Alfred Desrochers (if you manage to find the entrance... quite tough). They're probably near 50 degrees on at least 500' high) But I never got the time to find them, as 9 of my 13 best trails ever are at Orford (Contour, Chevreuil, Écureuil, Super, Labrecque, Lacroix, Passe de l'Ours, Porc-Épic and Dubreuil.) (my best at MRG is #14 (lower Antelope... Fall Line is in the 20s. Paradise and Chute would hit the top 100)

(PS : the rocky pic of called "Dubreuil" on Marc's Article is in fact the "Boogie"... Dubreuil is a little bit wider, with a very long steep pitch deep in the woods !

If you need more details (lol), feel free to ask me.

Of course, there is correct mountains in the region. Your son would appreciate Owl's Head (1772'), with fast groomers, but the problems is that they now groom almost all the trails and you wouldn't find any "decent" terrain for you anymore, I think. Sutton is a good possibility, too, but it's less high (1510') (Glade mountain concept)

Hey Frank, I never said I didn't like Orford. BTW it is not 7-8 years since my last visit, but more like 21 years!!! But that just means that there are too many places to ski and not enough days off (joking). It's funny, I never managed to go back.

I would say the time between Jay and Orford is at the most 1 hour (probably a bit less). Sutton and Owl's Head are also good. Owl's Head is the closest from Jay (30-45 minutes). If you want to try night skiing? Try one evening at Bromont. The best night skiing in Quebec IMO.

The two hours from Jay would limit you to the Townships. The good news is that the best areas of the region are all within a one hour from Jay. You need at less two hours to reach the beginning of the Laurentians, and Quebec City/Charlevoix is even further.

I think the Townships offers the best concentration of 'worth the trip' ski areas in Quebec. Sure Tremblant, Ste.Anne and Le Massif are also great, but the neighbourhood is not as rich in major ski areas.

Fastly (trip to the townships this morning) :

Orford : I wasn't talking of you in particular for the 7-8 years !

Owl's Head : even the swampfest will not stop at Owl's Head this year (for the 1st time), cause it's too boring (Leigh Daboll told me on the phone "conservative mind" and "grooming excessive")

The 2nd best ski area in the townships is more than 1h from Jay, in my opinion : Shefford. But I wouldn't drive 7h to ski in t-bars ;)

Concentration : what about Alta / Plante (5 minutes between them ! lol)

OK. I'm sold. I will give Orford a try this winter, probably February or March. Maybe it will be my #73. Unfortunately we have the same week off in March as the Ontario school systems, which makes for lines and crowds up your way. Thanks for the info Frankontour.

That's pretty self-explanatory. Plus, there are many, many times that a thaw and/or rain will often reach the northernmost regions of New England, when a drive a couple of hours further north will yield freshies -- precisely what happened to me at Le Valinouet 2 years ago.

Anonymous further wrote:

<!-Quote-!>Quote:
I love Castlerock at Sugarbush, the single chair at Mad River, the trees at Jay Peak<!-/Quote-!>

Then, I give you my own custom-prepared Quebec "hit list" (in no particular order):

- Orford
- Massif du Sud
- Mont-Edouard
- Sutton (not "glades" in the true sense of the word, but fun nonetheless)

You may find feature articles on each of these places here. I read Marc's article on Orford and it sounds well worth checking out myself.

The pic and description of Countour remind me of my favorite trail at Sugarbush. I'll bet you guys know the run I'm talking about. I've been known to say, " You don't ski it. It skis you."
