Slides open at Whiteface

An email I received this morning from Sandy Caligiore of ORDA:

For the first time this season, the Slides at Whiteface are now open. Today is day one.

Slides 2-3-4 are available and will offer a loose granular surface at this time. With our extended forecast, it is expected that they will remain open through the weekend, but check the conditions page at whiteface.com for updates or call 518-946-2223.

That's a daytrip for Patrick. Go get 'em! And take Morgane with you  .

My guess from what I read here is that people don't get to ski the Slides in powder hardly ever. So I suspect it's like Baldy has been recently. You want to make sure it's warm enough to soften things up.

In march 2001, I skied it and although it wasn't powder, it was plenty soft. Had I traversed to the far north side however, it would have been powder. The conditions were midwinter. If I remember properly, there was so much snow, we were skiing over the tops of trees. It was almost an entire open bowl.

March 2001 was when Jay had 180 inches snowfall. Possibly the best month in my 30+ years of eastern snowfall records. "Hardly ever in powder" is probably accurate.

Yes, this is a good timing. Regardless of being carless this weekend, my mom is arriving today. So the car doesn't seem to be an issue. Prior to this post, I was thinking either heading to Tremblant or Whiteface. Not a sure, still need to negotiate.

Not going to happen. Music lesson then birthday/sleepover party. IF she skis this weekend, it will be a few hours at a local on Sunday afternoon. If I could, I would bring her, but it's not only my decision to make.

Slides aren't never open on a powder day report ;) - link

Tony, I've link this report last week. How quickly do we forget?

That is true. I still have dreams about that march.

I didn't forget.
Loose powder and bumps. Once you merged with Slide #1 toward the bottom, you have to negotiate a series cliffs/frozen or melting waterfalls.
But the description made it sound much more like technical lower Baldy/La Grave skiing than just a steep glade full of fresh snow.

My friend who lives up there says they are going to try to keep the slides open for the rest of the season.

One major obstacle is the blue-ice waterfall. But it is manageable.

I'm going to try to get up there next weekend if possible.

It was snowing today at Whiteface according to the snowphone.

The Slides were also CLOSED, so beware if you automatically open if you go. Call ahead if that is the main reason of your trip (pretty much impossible if you're driving a few hours).

I'd love to see a pic if anyone gets up there.

I have a friend-of-friend on the patrol at Whiteface....but he is semi-negative/non-excited about this terrain. A grizzled point of view. Not sure why

Anyways, it looks like it some of the unique terrain of New England/Eastern skiing - Snowfields of Sugarloaf, Tuckermans, Face areas of Jay, Above Gondy/Mansfield at Stowe.

He probably is a racer. Racers could care less about this type of terrain. He probably doesn't ski a fat ski. Whiteface breeds racers.

A fat ski might be the wrong ski depending on the conditions up there. The "slide out" is miserable. The traverses is tight, and tucked in the trees, and if I remember properly, bumpy, long, and I'm sure it can get icy.

The Slides opened today (Sat.). Due to yesterday's snowfall they are requiring avi beacons, probes, and shovels. I'm sure they were skiing great today for the few that got to venture in.

Maybe I'll get to ski them on my next trip up there. Know someone who works there. Hope I'm good enough to handle them!!!

Haven't decided on tomorrow (just got back from skiing), but the avy gear is in Montreal. Regardless, Whiteface doesn't need the slides to be fun, the slides just make the place more fun. :D

Well, I stayed in Ottawa. I had put my alarm for 5am then my youngest daughter started vomiting at 4am. Wife was saying, go skiing I don't mind. The rest would have to be written in the Kitchen discussion. I have a few more weekends planed this season, I wasn't willing to burn some good will for one solo day trip. :(
