South America 2025

You can see why you want to wait until there is snow on the ground in South America. Sometimes these mega-storms do not come to fruition, and it can be an abysmal season (many in the 2010s and 2020s).

When your average snowfall is 200-300 inches and you miss a 50-80" storm, that's a significant % of your overall snowfall for the season.

Same in California's Sierra, but most mountains receive more snow than the Andes, and Tony calculates less volatility.

Looks like South America missed a few big storms this year:
  • Large June storm
  • Large late August storm
  • Not too much else in Central Andes and Patagonia Argentina. Chillan looks like it had a decent season.
The ski areas are starting to close: Las Lenas, Portillo and Chillan close this weekend.

La Parva: 190cm / 75in YTD snowfall (terrible!) https://laparva.cl/en/mountain-report/mountain-conditions/
Valle Nevado: 413cm / 162.6in YTD snowfall https://www.vallenevado.com/en/mountain-report/
Portillo: 436 cm / 171in YTD snowfall https://skiportillo.com/en/our-mountain/portillo-snow-forecast-conditions/

Overall, another skip year - unfortunately becoming more the norm.

About Mountain Capital Partners ownership: a lot of complaints about grooming, especially at La Parva. Not always 1 groomer per lift in September. I wonder if they have over-extended themselves in the SouthWest, and this is a result of a poor snow year 24/25 in the US.

MCP has pretty much thrown in the towel with grooming, now featuring perhaps 0.6 runs groomed per lift in Valle Nevado and La Parva. Yup, several lifts with no runs groomed. Even been abandoning the connecting trails.
