I could start a debate how the West sucks versus the Alps, but it doesn't in my book.

One isn't better than the other one, just different. Why would I keep mentioning this if I've ski the West (in Epic conditions according to Tony) and the Alps AND still think that the East isn't inferior?

Only the elite of the West stacks up against the Alps.

But I will never back you up on the East.

Yes, 20% in the East, but ALSO only 40% in the West. The World is big and as I mentioned to Chris, there is bigger quantity of major hills in the West than the East.

A few points that I didn't have the energy to respond last night.

What was so great about Patrick's season this year, aside from that epic weekend in Vermont Dec. 15-17?

I don't exagerate on terms like Epic or Extreme like some many people out there (not necessarily here) use. You know how measured I am when I talk about my experiences - I remember you noticing that I wasn't blown away by Big Sky/Moonlight Basin...I definitely loved, but I measure my comments.

When I use "Epic", it is "Epic". That December weekend, especially that day at Smuggs was as great as any day I can remember, East or West.

He never made to Quebec City in its record snow year. He went to Whiteface 2 weeks ago and hit the one day out of 4 that the Slides weren't open.

Whiteface is a great mountain, regardless if the Slides are open or not. Tell James or Harvey that the conditions were less than great. I was at WF 2 days out of the 4 that the Slides weren't open (same day as Sharon also). I've also made it to Mad a total of 4 days this Winter.

. And he lives in a metro area like most people in North America. The blunt truth is the more you lead that "normal life" the more important "where to live" becomes as a driver of quality skiing. (...)When I was Patrick's current age in 1996 I had a grand total of 3K of powder in an entire season, and decided that was unacceptable as I wasn't getting any younger.

Okay, the metro argument. 3k of powder, as you know, I don't keep track of powder verts, but I have number for this entire season (except when I'm racing). For me, corn, powder, etc...all surfaces are great, just some are greater than others. Okay, I lied, sand really sucks.

If I would live in such a sucky location, let's use your measurement on pwoder verts. Why did I get at least 6k (in metric) powder verts like you call them within 30 miles from my house? I'm not even counting the Calabogie snowstorm day.

What I like, is that there is someone from the Mammoth forum moved to Ottawa last Summer. His perspective about how bad Ottawa is a location is somewhat different than yours.

Packin up the jeep in two weeks to see if I can't get some western snow before it all melts away after a nearly 100 day EC winter. Righteous corn festival up on the rock pile the last week and a half.

Do what makes you happy, and ski a lot.

Uh, yeah. I went from 240 days(2 seasons), doing the best job in the biz (avie control/search and rescue/ski patrol-read mad skiing) at the Canyons spending almost every weekend in LCC or Snowbasin to....drum roll...160 days patrolling at...drum roll...GREEK PEAK. People ask me if I'm bored. I answer "no". I'd roll into "work" every morning and ask my "co-worker" how he was doing and the reply would always be the same-"Living the Dream AC, living the Dream". He was only half kidding. My co-worker also happened to be a five year veteran of Bridger, having attended Ski-U on the 5 year program in Bozeman. Happiness comes from somewhere within, I do believe. I would have to trash so many things and people in my life to live in Park City again...I think about it, but I'm staying put here w/Sharon in Ithaca...for now...
