The Dip @ JAy

I know that skiing the Dip may as well be on the trail map these days, but it is getting rediculous there on weekends. I saw some idiot not control their speed at the bottom, skip over the bank on the roadside and land in the road, thankfully the on coming car was driving slow enough and a disaster was avoided. I had a kid come up to my car saying that they had ''followed'' tracks down and ended up there, they wanted a ride, sorry I was full. I have walked bck plenty of times, it is good exercise. My friends and I make sure that we always have cars down there. Although I don't consider it backcountry skiing, people still need to prepare themselves, like leave a car. 242 was littered with people walking back to the resort today, it was even tough to drive around them. People also drive way to fast through there, I bet some people blow through there at 60+. There was also some idiot from NJ in a Grand Cherokee going to fast, skidded and smoked another cherokee, the ahole backed up and drove away, real nice. I guess that this was a bit of a rant, but wanted to see if anyone else out there in the JAy regular community has noticed this.

Other than that it was a decent day, no complaints on the skiing. Always would like more snow.

pretty busy place in general, great place when it's puking during the week when it's not canadian vacation weeks. places to the south and east definately benefited from more natural snow than jay as well. i may consider going there on tues or wed if it's no vis puking conditions.

Threads like this certainly will not help it be any less ridiculous on weekends. ;) There is a reason I no longer make any names in my Trip Reports, I learned the hard way years ago that even name dropping in trip reports for other like minded and knowledgeable skiers inevitably leads to someone not in the know taking note and asking questions. Nothing wrong with that, tis how I found things. I am certainly not going to make things easier on other up coming skiers than it was for me, though.

Last time I was at Jay, non-car spot off map trees were skiing better than the Dip. I was beside myself how many tracks had been laid in there by noon time. Given the traffic levels of cars accessing Jay from Montgomery, it certainly does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

I have walked back a few times. Sometimes I get a lift, usually I don't. Comes with the territory when you are skiing solo. My only pet peeve is people standing around the lot waiting for someone to take pity on them. When I am driving, I never stop for someone that is not already walking. That is a horrid assumption to make.

Not really a secret since they had pictures of people skiing it in the JAy brochure last year with the tag line of the dip. This site is a little more off the beaten path than places like the AZ etc... Not too worried.

It is also mentioned on their web site. But don't think just because a place like this is off the beaten path that it is just dedicated hard core registered users reading. I suspect a forum like FTO has 10 lurkers for every one poster, at the least, digging for pay dirt on where to ski and conditions. The more even the well known "secrets" are talked up, the more people that will ski those locations. And with untracked in such short supply, even a dozen more folks out there on a crowded weekend can make a difference and I mean "out there" as a generalization for anything that the general public would be slow to pick up on.

I assure you that it's nearly an order of magnitude more than that.

Never thought about it, but I'm sure Admin is right. How many regulars do we have? Let say people who post say 1x per week in the winter. I don't think there are 100 in the Eastern Forum. My Gore TRs, get one or two replies, sometimes none, but 100-150 views. Unless they are so exciting that you guys are reading them over and over  ...there are a lot of lurkers out there. Per Riv's advice, I am going to think carefully about what I post.

I don't see discussing this place any different than discussing Big Jay. Pretty soon after one of these idiots gets hit by a car there is going to be an issue with skiing down there, and we will all have to suffer again.

Did anyone see the sign about the two young men this weekend? That is going to be more and more of this. Maybe if those lurkers read this stuff they will think twice about venturing there. Don't follow tracks, if you have never been past the orange band of the resort lines then don't go.

There are hundreds of lines in the dip area. Those of course are can be disclosed.

I really don't mind publicizing places so obvious like the dip... In fact, just like Beaver Pond and Andre's Paradise, these places are the places where you'll almost never see me go to! Overtracked, overrated and full of tourists...

I was in the area today and couldn't believe how many people there were all day... People riding on the road, people walking and/or sliding back to the resort... Incredible... felt like it was part of the resort... but then again, i kind of understand... I was something like 8-9 years old the first time i went there with my dad and sister (and 2 ski patrol he knew)

Then again, i would put as much people as i could on the dip if this would relieve some traffic on the inbounds glades that are much more worth it! I saw the signs about the 2 kids that got lost... again, i say "GO FOR IT"... Get out there without a clue and get lost... Most of us learned about the mountain tree by tree... baby steps... Now kids think they're oh-so-cool on there fat skis they think they're invincible and can do "like in the movies"... To me, it's just another twist in the natural selection process... The kid too dumb to figure it out doesn't get to have kids of his own... Easy... Simple... and it's been going on for ages! Thanks Darwin!

If I didn't get the chance to say so previously, "Welcome, Gregg!" I'd love to see more of our lurkers pipe up -- it could only make the community better and stronger.

Thanks very much for the welcome. I'll post if I have something worthwhile (or funny) to say. (Except for my post above, which was neither)

I have never skied the Dip even though I've been skiing Jay since 87. I would agree there are a lot of people who get in waaaaay over their head. You hear abouth them all the time. I usually don't get to spend a lot of time in the woods at Jay. I'm skiing solo most of the time so I stick to the glades close to the groomers. Every once in a while I'll hook up with someone after a chatty chair ride if it seems I won't be holding them back. Never been off the backside or over past Timbuktu. I would not consider my self a BC skier but I can empathize with them regarding the closure of part of Big Jay. Someday I'll ski off the back with someone who knows what they're doing.

BTW, Wildcat was very good yesterday. Especially after the "crowd" thinned out and the snow blew in. The drive home really stunk, though.

**edit** Oh crap....I killed a kitten....I'm so sorry.
