One other important thing about Main Chute......

It's not nearly as steep as the photos on the first page of this thread suggest. Look at those carefully and you'll see that the camera was tilted a good 15 degrees!!!

Both "The Powder Hound's Guide to Skiing Alta" and McLean's "The Chuting Gallery" put Main at 43 degrees or so (and PHGtSA places Highboy at 45 degrees) but it has always seemed significantly steeper and eventually mellows out to 45. It certainly looks steeper than the other two!

This would have to be based on snowpack....tuckermans ravine can vary depending on snowpack.

That's been my interpretation. I've seen the top of Main Chute around 60 degrees - in July. And yes, there were recent tracks in it. You think it's no-fall/DFU now? You should see it when it's barely skiable!!!

Yeah so it varies.....height of season it will be less steep, with melt it will get steeper...

I am the poster who put em up on TGR and am getting slammed like its some 30 degree groomer....fools....

I still bet the first 3 -4 turns were a good 50 degrees despite camera angle...its near impossible to get a level shot there ya know...

Oh, puh-leeze! I was standing on a sidehill, using someone else's camera and didn't have the benefit of a burst mode. Geez, I didn't get the horizon perfectly level.

Actually, being my own worst critic when it comes to photo composition, the first thing I noticed when I saw the photos for the first time was the messed up horizon.

You had to know they were going to bust your balls in the first post when Particle said "this is going to be fun."

If you really wanted to prove your Alta coreness, you would've skied it with your Spats.

yeah but really whats it off??? 10 degrees???

Over at the other "place" you'd think youd tilted it 50 degrees and I was standing on a flat....

I know it isnt the steepest skied, but man..it aint a walk in the park either...even at the "published" 43 degrees...

Again this is all dependent on snowpack...it will VARY GREATLY based on snow levels...seemed pretty steep to me...

Ha...you're right...not enough snow on the rest of the mtn for those...but I think its easily done...like mentioned those arent that hard to handle on "harder" snow...and that snow in the chute was soft n chaulky would've been no problem..

Over there though James they make it sound like I was on a flat and the photog tilted the camera 50 degrees...Admin was off by MAYBE 10 degrees though Marc_c thinks 15....nitpicky...

Just a shame you try to post "stoke" over there and they slam you like you were on some groomer...cmon...whats that about?

Oh, agreed...one can see why you wouldn't want to get too close to the edge of that (or any) cornice with one hand on a camera (not watching your feet!)...I immediately noticed that Admin was leaning in to get those shots...pretty cool!

Re: comparisions...the only two other runs I can reference are JH Corbet's and the Palisades at Squaw...when I was at JH, there wasn't much snowpack and Corbet's was just too gnarly for me to drop 20 ft onto hardpack as a mere noob...Palisades appears a little less initimating than Main Chute since there's only that brief steep pitch (100 ft. vert?) after dropping in, afterwhich you run out into a large bowl...not having skied Main Chute, while very difficult, it would seem to be not quite as nasty as Corbet's...thoughts??

To put it mildly, exposure ain't my specialty, so I'm in no position to say anything, but staying out of the pissing contests is rule number one over there. The more you argue, the worse it gets.

Corbets ALWAYS has that NASTY entrance crop...that is not the case with Main chute.

I know that...but I can give it as well as take it..so...im going to keep going....

Once the "talkers" have come out and actually skied with me...then they can COMMENT all they like...until then...they're just gapers wishing they were there... :D

OK, since this has gone into the realm of lunacy, I measured the horizon tilt with my handy BCA inclinometer (had to buy that one since my eyes can no longer read the super tiny indicator lines on a Life-Link inclinometer - next step is a digital Sunnto!).

Photo #07: 12 degrees
Photo #09: 14 degrees
Photo #10: 11 degrees

Was that your first post there? If so, internet hazing. I also find that a lot of folks on that forum, uh, lack life experience (iow, either anonymous teenagers behind mommy and daddy's keyboard or acting like they are).

Ok so you were right on the 15...the pic I used was #9 so 14....good call...Still over "there" they make it seem like its not a steep run...

Dude, stop! Schoolmarm is the beginner's slope at Keystone.

Um yeah I know..."DUDE" I skied it soley for the "36 hours" of Keystone this year..since it was the only thing open...

I was just stating that while Alta isnt the steepest..its pretty steep..

Thanks for looking out for me though  I really barely started skiing...never skied anything those "rippers" at TGR have....never...

Cmon dude..I been in the game for quite a while now...

I noticed that horizon tilt right away. I thought for a minute it might be deliberate, but having been up there last March I recall not having a very steady hand with the camera at that exposure.

We've had these steepness debates before, though usually with people like Frank who haven't even seen much less skied Main Chute type steep.

Lots of slopes develop cornices at the top that vary by snow depth or how the most recent storm came in. When they require mandatory airs like Corbet's, I usually take a pass.

The distinguishing feature of Main is that it sustains the 40+ degrees for 700+ vertical. Numerous runs start that steep for 5-10 turns and then drop into the 30's. Google Earth (crude measure) showed 41 degrees for 700 vertical. I'd be inclined to take Andrew MacLean's word for it on the 43 measure.

I don't think Highboy is as steep. Highboy should be totally within one's comfort zone before considering an attempt of Main IMHO. And you want to be acclimated, so you're not fatigued by the time you get up there and start skiing. Last March the hike from Sugarloaf took me 34 minutes. I skied Main very defensively as the snow was packed out and mogulled more than these pics. First time up there in March 1990 it was my first day in Utah and the hike took 45 minutes. But the snow was soft, smooth and very forgiving. There are a lot more people doing this now than back then.
