Don't forget the luxury you have living where you do - you're able to pick the best place on the best days with relatively little notice. That's not the case for those of us who lived in the flatlands 5, 6, or 7 hrs south of northern VT, as Peter and I did. Places where you have to commit to the weekend by Tuesday to get a decent but non-refundable price on accommodations. Even if the weather report goes sour on Thursday, you'd go anyway and try to make the best of it. Other times you'd pass on what looked to be miserable conditions only to curse on Saturday morning when the storm came in colder and wetter than expected, dropping a foot of fresh. Many years it took real effort to get over 30 days.

Well, we all make our choices for sure, this much is true. But your experiences are not necessarily reflective of the entire New England ski experience, so I will continue to call out broad based statements that are not in line with my experiences, which is what precipitated my statement.

Location has been a point of exchange here in the past. And many people are of the opinion, a hair splitting opinion IMO, that my having been in St. Johnsbury and currently being in Ashland is a great advantage over those in the Metro areas. But I did the same driving and commuting and picking of days as a Boston Metro skier. That said, 5-7 hours away is definitely beyond day trip range and does pose logistical problems, I will concede that. But that makes location and reliability of snow fall that much more important. The difference an extra hour of driving between central VT and northern VT makes is made up in spades when you factor needing to book in advance.

Alright, enough of that crap, this thread is going to start getting serious or something. :D
 
Too late.

I'm living 5 hours from our mountain. Skied 16 days this year, and haven't seen a death cookie yet. And had some awesome days. I did hit some ice on Hawkeye at the end of last week.

Just defendin.

Rog - would love permission to post your latest poem on a teley site I visit. Could really ad something to the constant Teley vs AT vs bondage conversation over there.

Hey everybody, if you're going to dish some out, be prepared to get some back. A little "Tit for Tat" and everybody gets all sensitive. Regardless, today was AWESOME at Alta. While it was a little snowy and the partly cloudy in the valley yesterday, it DUMPED overnight at the top. Our little "gang of seven" got to ski some beautiful lines, most untracked, in lovely sunshine and temps in the mid to upper 20's today. I'm sure Admin will be posting some really pretty footage later today.

Marc C was right. Over the years those of us who were limited by rigid work schedules, and having to drive 5 - 7 hours to the slopes had to endure some truly nasty skiing. I can't tell you how many time we made the drive only to experience either "crunchy" or "soggy" conditions. We did not have the luxury of just taking a couple of hours to run off to ski powder for the few hours it actually stayed that way. And, you can say what you want, eastern "glades" just aren't in a league with skiing the steep trees of UT. I think the base went over 100" today, and the snow total is around 275." I, like so many of you made the best of what there is/was in the east. But, after a half dozen trips to UT (not to mention two full week trips to Summit County CO) I decided (like Brigham Young did for other reasons) "This is the place." My life circumstances gave me the opportunity to live here for a time, and I decided to take it. I am enjoying new friends, a new environment, and the SNOW!

Rog, if you knew Draper, you'd know that Peter is far from gaperhood. Draper is a town that desperately wants to be in Utah County but is trapped on the wrong side of Point of the Mountain in Salt Lake County, and carries all the attendant cultural baggage that that statement implies. 8)

yo admin, i'm not skiing cuz i don't ski weekends. oh actually i xc ski from home on weekends, actually i ski 7 days a week. gave up skiing weekends when i finished high school early and don't miss them one bit.

Yo, Ice... if it be Pat's on Monday, let me know. I am skiing in a beer league at Pat's on Mondays. Two quick runs on the race, but other than that I'll be free skiing.

will do, i'm watchin the weather today from work and won't go further south than pats, sunapee is the other option but, knowing you may be at pats, some incentive there.
i'll drive over tonight, an hour or so, crash in the honda wagon so i don't have to drive in the a.m., do an early couple of skin laps if 4 inches or more then hit 830 chair.
when will u b there?
