If you actually read my post, you'll see I'm dumping pretty unmercifully on Draper. Maybe it was too subtle for you glacier skiers?

dumpin on draper? guess that makes two us. but, marc we're about to get dumped on not one but twice while utah sits under high pressure for a few nights. sit back, relax and have some chow while icelantic and the rest enjoy some pow. comin to utah, should be cute. i'll look for in rear entry boots. sure i'll see ya sooner or later, in solomon binding covers you use as gaiters. i'll be farmin by all means, those gaiters coverin those sx91's and jeans.

will do, i'm watchin the weather today from work and won't go further south than pats, sunapee is the other option but, knowing you may be at pats, some incentive there.
i'll drive over tonight, an hour or so, crash in the honda wagon so i don't have to drive in the a.m., do an early couple of skin laps if 4 inches or more then hit 830 chair.
when will u b there?
glad my work's hardly work.

The beer league racing is in the evening. I will definitely be there. When depends upon how bad I-93 and roads to Pat's from Concord are. Probably will be arriving around 5pm and race time is 7pm. Will be lapping Hurricane and Cyclone until the race starts, then two race runs, then more Hurricane and Cyclone under the lights until they close. My jacket is pretty distinctive and my helmet has two Cannon stickers and a cut up MRG sticker. Probably will be skiing my 8000 since I will be more interested in the powder than my race results. Maybe I will see you there.

Wow I was going to leave this thread alone and it was making me laugh...but cmon man...unless you guys get FEET like 2...it'll all be skied off by noon on the boilerplate left from last weeks weather...anything else...and you're kidding yourself...

I been skiing the east coast for near 30 years....and ive seen MANY recent pics from MANY different east coast areas and you guys are hurting..you had a great season and i'm sure you harvested early, like any hard core east coast skied would, and you'll wait out the Jan thaw and hope for the best in Feb March...

Now that i've moved "west" i know we'll have 20+ inch days into May...(we did last May 16th anyway :D )....

Have fun enjoying your "pow"...

Don't sweat it Skidog, cut him some slack. I mean, really, he intentionally picked a handle of icelanticskier - how sad is that? What with the recent heavy thaw, rain, and hard freeze, he probably just has a bit of sand in his vagina. 8)

Be careful Marc or he will "shizzle your izzle" or whatever evil things they can think of in Jr. HS. Next thing you know, he will learn about using upper case letters and (I'm warning you!) he might use them on you. On the other hand, he must have left school too early, before they covered that part of the alphabet.

i used to type on the internet using lower case letters. certainly was no reflection upon my intellect but rather on my cultural identification at the time. i think this thread is dangerously close from going from its all good to not much fun.....

Sorry rivercOil I wasn't referring to you. It was about the "shizzler" aka icelanticskier.

Snowing...more snow in the forecast. :D ... as I sit at my desk at work with little vacation days left*.

* if I get my vacation days approved.

Gee, looked what I missed while I was in Whistler.

For every east coast skier like River and icelantic, there are at least 10 like MarcC and tirolerpeter. Most of them live too damn far away from the goods to average decent quality by west coast, let alone Utah standards.

You are very right Tony. And, it was always very time, money, and energy consuming to get to the snow. However, it seems that Marc_C and I have cut those distances down a bit. I now live 16 miles from the Snowbird Tram, and for Marc_C it is probably under 12. I may hook up with an east coast AZ'er tomorrow and do some "bluebird" skiing on two day old powder. I guess we will have to root around in the trees or hike for untracked.

Skimore, I think you miss Tony's point. You're outside of Syracuse, not on Long Island or in northern New Jersey or, as a Mid-Atlantic friend calls his home, M*A*S*H (Mid-Atlantic Ski Hell). (I'm sure Ono could relate!) You can hit the goods of the Tug Hill Plateau as a daytrip, as your photos show. You don't have to drive 7 hours each way to catch a chance powder day. I grew up in southeastern Connecticut, which isn't horrifically far, but it's much farther than when I lived in Saratoga Springs or in Burlington, VT. From SE CT, anything north of Killington (3.5 hours each way) was beyond daytrip range for my family.

Living in Burlington I could duck out for a few hours here and there. When I lived in Saratoga I worked on the road and my territory was from Glens Falls north to the Canadian border, and the entire state of Vermont -- you can bet that my skis traveled around in the company car. That's the kind of flexible access that Tony's referring to.

Tony's comment was merely to point out that those who live 5 or 7 hours away from the goods can't catch a powder day on a moment's notice. That's just common sense.

Tony, you're talking average. Nothing about this place is average.

Average skiers/boarders prefer groomers and like McSkiing.

Average skiers/boarders ski from Christmas Holidays til early March.

Average skiers/boarders ski how many times a year?

Average skiers/boarders don't spend their time online ski forums.

I think the point that was brought up by icelantic was that the East skiing doesn't have anything to be ashamed about. Something that I've always said and will always believe in. 8)

There is also a generalisation that all of us in the East are 5 or 7 hours away from the goods. Okay, it might apply to people living in Long Island (I don't really know or care). Not everybody in the West are as close to regular great skiing as the folks in Salt Lake. Western Canada includes Manitoba and Saskatchewan and we've talked about Phoenix elsewhere in this forum, so some Western location aren't ideal either.

Funny how many threads, if they get long enough, turn into this same thread again.

I think that it's human nature to think that what "you've" got is good or better than what others have. Some kind of built in optimism.

Our town is almost precisely in the middle of NJ. Classic MASH. Slowly but surely we've taken more steps to make it easier to ski. It started when I realized that getting a room up the north country was really tough by the time you KNEW snow was coming. I bought some land and camped on it. After I got married, we added a driveway and then a 1-room building. Then when we had a baby we added electric and water. I'm in a position now with our company that SOMETIMES I can change schedule with little notice. Over christmas when I realized (thanks powderfreak) New Years Day and beyond was going to be fantastic I made some calls from the hill and stayed another 5 days.

The next step is this Friday. After a lot of thought, we're getting a phone line and web access at the cabin. Lots of pros and cons to it. But I thought, skipping out with little notice is easier to sell if I can be reached. Maybe ski the mornings and work the afternoon.

Tony - I'd be curious to know if you have any numbers on how many days "the average skier" skis.

I'm at Day 16 and holding since 1/5. I'll ski Friday AM and meet the phone guy in the afternoon. I skied 31 days last year, and my goal this year, before we got off to this amazing start, was to hit 35.

I think that it's human nature to think that what "you've" got is good or better than what others have. Some kind of built in optimism.
Precisely.

Every ski area has a range of possible conditions. On this forum most of us put the powder days at the top, say 6 inches minimum new snow (Riverc0il's definition, fairly reasonable). That's maybe 15-20% at a place like Jay or Mammoth with 300-350 inch average. Probably not any more than 35% even in LCC.

If you are not flexible you're going to see the full range of conditions, and the bottom 30-40% in the East are not pretty. A 20th percentile day in Mammoth or LCC is still fine skiing, and in February/March even 10th or 5th percentile is pretty good.

So the L.A. skier who books his room at Mammoth a month or two ahead is going to be happy with his experience nearly every time, while the NY skier making the same committment to Vermont is going to get burned and think he wasted his money 1/3 of the time.

On the non-powder days not only the conditions but the greater scale and terrain variety (alpine, steeps, etc.) of the West come into play. IMHO powder is the equalizer. Powder days like Riverc0il and powderfreak show us here are what elevate the eastern ski experience to be world class.

MarcC and tirolerpeter are FTO posters and not "average skiers" and they aren't looking back.

Not everybody in the West is as close to regular great skiing as the folks in Salt Lake.....some Western locations aren't ideal either.
True, but it's debatable whether the best of the East (Montreal, Vermont) would crack the top 10 in the West. And you need to be flexible like Riverc0il and powderfreak to make that argument.

Tony - I'd be curious to know if you have any numbers on how many days "the average skier" skis.
If you divide skier visits by number of people who say they skied, I suspect the answer would be something like 5. I once read that subscribers to SKI and SKIING magazines average about 23 days. I'll humbly remind all of you that during my 13 "family obligation" seasons I averaged 24 days. And with those commitments affecting scheduling I'm sure glad I was in L.A. and not in the East.
