Eastern Closing dates 2007-08

Pre-weekend update.

Like mentioned above, a few ski areas have decided on not opening this weekend. Unfortunately, this list should be shorter to check next week. Still looks like the biggest number of ski areas I've ever seen in memory looking into making to the 3rd weekend in April.

Bromont is april 20th. I was there today with solid conditions on the bottom and corn on top. The snow park is in great shape but there is only the main side open.

Familly season pass there for next season: 777$
+ waterpark season familly pass extra: 79$
+ mountain bike familly season pass: 150$

But skiing is not over yet

Made that update and a few new ones again.

Mount Snow: April 20
Royal Mountain: April 13

A few ski areas closed today regardless of the 100% open status and deep snowpack, at least in Quebec. I sampled one of those areas today. 8) Many of these areas are only opening on weekend, so you better check their website.

Went to Loon yesterday (yeah, I know...) because I've never been there before and my son and I both skied for $60 total. He had an unused "4th Grade Earn Your Turns" pass. Their trail count seemed bogus and they had a lot of runs closed due to small bare spots or a bit of ice. Snowed while we were there but no real accumulation. Anyhow, I was reading a North Conway newspaper article about skiers poaching runs after the areas were closed and the GM from Wildcat was quoted as saying that it wasn't a problem for Wildcat because they "will be open until the snow is gone". No date given. There was a rumor going around that areas would prosecute "tresspassers" after the areas closed to the public. They interviewed officials from Attitash, Bretton Woods, Cranmore, Black Mountain and Wildcat. Apparently no one is planning on aggressively targeting tresspassers but they all warned of ongoing maintenance projects that may introduce additional hazards to their slopes.

Jay Peak now says they're extending closing to 4/27 though they won't make a call on midweek ops next week until Thursday. link

I just got Wildcats Newsletter. Here's a quote.

Oh yeah, if one more person asks me if I'm serious when I say we're shooting to stay open until the first weekend in May and perhaps even Mother's Day weekend if the conditions hold-up, trust me, we are serious. Holy smokes, it is snowing outside as I write this

I was there the last weekend they were open last year. Had a freekin blast. Probably do the loaf on Sat and wildcat on sunday's to make the ride home fairly easy. Seems like we have a real comp between the loaf and Wildcat.

Many updates on the list above:

Big news: Wildcat is mentioning that it will either close on May 4 or May 11.

Other updates:

VAl St-Côme and Avila QC - confirmed for this weekend.
Val Neigette QC - setting April 20 as their last day.
Camp Fortune QC - aiming for May 4.

I was mistaken, Vallée Bleue in the Laurentians hasn't closed for the season. They plan to be open this weekend and maybe the following one also.

BTW. My front lawn is 70% snow free, while my backyard is 40% snow free. What a season and it's not over. 8)

It's hot up here. Forecast high in Ottawa today is 20c, snow is melting fast. My front lawn is 95% snow free, while my backyard is 60% snow free.

Ah yes, Mount Snow has set it's closing day to April 27.

This weekend is the last hurrah for many of the remainding ski areas that are still open.

Mont Sutton has mentioned that it was going to be open everyday until the 27th, after that, they'll evaluate.

gunstock has better cover than wildcat at this point. maybe the kitty will make it till 4/27 by running the lower bobcat chair. sugarloaf is where it's at and they could go later than may 4th no problemo. saddleback has more snow than all of em.

After Loon and Bretton Woods closing today (April 21th), this is what will be left.

15 ski areas remaining East of the Rockies.

It has got real hot in Ottawa this week. 26c on Saturday. Blue Mtn ON didn't make it to the weekend. Val d'Irène QC closed on Saturday with the forecast rain on Sunday. Camp Fortune QC, Le Relais QC, Crabbe NB closed on Sunday prior to their set dates or decided to closed then.

Something real interesting, Massif du Sud has shutdown for the year, however they will reopen for one day special on May 3 if they pre-sell 200 lift tickets.

That's an interesting idea. Ski areas are always claiming that spring is a losing proposition, so people who are always moaning about early closings can sack up and put their money where their mouths are.

I was told that the one day thing got cancelled, because there wasn't enough interest. Personally I think they gave up pretty fast.

So substract one area, but add Mont Miller (Gaspe Peninsula) that looking to still have their lift(s?) running next weekend.
