Deal to Build Indoor Ski Resort on Long Island Melting

Riverhead, NY – News reports indicate that like snow melting in a heat wave, the Town of Riverhead will later this week dissolve a deal to sell 750 acres upon which Scottish developers hoped to build an indoor ski resort on Long Island.nAccording to published reports, town officials are frustrated are frustrated by delays that have kept the town from receiving the $108 million sale price from the developer, Riverhead Resorts, for the land at the former Grumman naval weapons plant property in Calverton, even though the town received a $3.9 million check last week. The contract between the town and the developer called for funds to be transferred via wire, not a check.

Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter says that he will now encourage the town to subdivide the land and use the $7.5 million received to date from Riverhead Resorts to pay down the town’s debt.

John Niven, head of Riverhead Resorts in Scotland, indicates that his firm has spent $18 million to date on the project and still plans to proceed despite the town’s misgivings. He blames the current economic conditions for his firm’s difficulty in obtaining financing for the ski resort.
