North Conway, NH – The New England Ski Museum has a new location for its North Conway satellite exhibit in the New Hampshire ski town’s historic Eastern Slope Inn. Previously, the organization based in Franconia Notch, N.H., had an exhibit in North Conway since December 2008, situated on the ground floor of the Shops at Norcross Place, and in that time hosted approximately 5,000 visitors.nThe new site of the exhibit is in the area of the Eastern Slope Inn that had been the hotel’s dining room in the era when the inn was the center of one of the country’s first ski resorts encompassing Mount Cranmore and the nearby historic hotel. Since the 1980s, the former dining room has been occupied by outdoor retailers EMS and Zimmermann’s Mountain Sports.

Numerous publicity photographs in the Museum’s collection, dating to the 1930s and 1940s when North Conway-bred financier Harvey Dow Gibson owned the Eastern Slope Inn, depict such skiing luminaries as Hannes and Herbert Schneider, Benno Rybiska, Toni Matt and Lowell Thomas celebrating various occasions in the space in which the exhibit now is located.

Stefan Hausberger, owner of the Zimmermann’s chain of outdoor stores, is related to Austrian Olympic skier Egon Zimmermann. Numerous objects and artifacts from Zimmermann’s skiing career are displayed throughout the shop, enhancing the Museum’s exhibit.

The Museum will have a selection of its well-known Museum Shop retail items for sale in North Conway. Books, posters, DVDs, T-shirts and glassware that are related to the Museum’s mission to preserve ski history can be found in the satellite exhibit.

The current exhibit in the Museum’s North Conway branch is The National Ski Patrol and Ski Patrolling in America. The group anticipates that during the summer this will change, and the popular Vanished From the Land: The Lost Ski Areas of New England will take its place.
