Bode Miller to Sit Out Ski Season

San Diego, CA – U.S. ski racer Bode Miller said this week that he’s going to skip this World Cup ski season, focusing instead on raising his family and racing his horses.

That could well translate into a retirement announcement for Miller, who’s now 38.

Miller’s wife, pro volleyball player Morgan Beck, gave birth to the couple’s first son in May — an addition to the family that has occupied Miller’s time and energy since then. Miller has two other children from previous relationships.

He’s also been focused on racing thoroughbreds. Along with a business partner, Miller now owns 15 horses and a barn in Maryland. Other spare time has been filled collaborating with Italian ski maker Bomber Ski.

Miller’s career victory tally includes 33 World Cup races, two overall World Cup titles, and Olympic gold in super-combined in 2010 at Vancouver/Whistler. He’s also earned three Olympic silver medals and two bronze. In recent years he’s been plagued by injury, undergoing back surgery to repair a herniated disk last November. He returned to ski racing in time for the 2015 World Championships at Beaver Creek, only to crash in the super G and sever his right hamstring tendon.

Miller, however, denies that physical maladies played a part in his decision to sit out this winter — he trained this summer in Europe and South America — and he’s still leaving the door open to possibly one day re-entering the starting gate.
