Unionized Telluride Ski Patrollers Approve Contract

Telluride, CO – After voting overwhelmingly to join a labor union last winter, Telluride ski patrollers last week similarly overwhelmingly voted to approve a new three-year contract.

By a vote of 50 to 1, Telluride patrollers agreed to a three-year labor contract that addresses wage security and increases, benefit improvements, a grievance policy and improvements in job security, all factors that led to the vote to unionize. The particulars of the new contract, however, were not disclosed.

“The approved contract is a win for patrol, a win for management and a win for the Telluride community, which can now be assured that the ski mountain will continue to operate with a professional ski patrol unit that is focused on safety in some of the most challenging mountain terrain in the country,” patroller Tony Daranyi said in a prepared statement.

Telluride Ski Patrol Director Scott Clements, a member of Telluride’s management, added that “it means we don’t have to do this again and again, and can spend our time offering ski patrol services to our guests. We’re excited about moving forward.”

Last February, Telluride’s ski patrol voted 47 to 1 to join the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The CWA also represents ski patrollers at Steamboat and Crested Butte in Colorado, as well as Canyons Resort in Utah, although their status at the latter resort is currently in question following Canyons’ integration into Park City Mountain Resort this winter.
