Park City, UT – Ski patrollers at the newly unified Park City Mountain Resort in Utah will vote Monday on joining a labor union.
Park City and nearby Canyons Resort merged this winter under new Vail Resorts ownership. But prior to the merger, Canyons patrollers were members of the Canyons Professional Ski Patrol Association, while Park City patrollers were not unionized.
If the vote is approved, all 200 of the combined ski resort’s patrollers would be members of a new union. If it fails, even those previously employed at Canyons Resort would no longer be union members, even though they negotiated a new contract with Vail Resorts last spring, as the merger of the two organizations meant that union members from Canyons Resort are now in a minority.
The association filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to give all patrollers in the newly combined organization a chance to vote on whether to form a new union. The NLRB will supervise the vote being held Monday in both base areas of the newly combined resort.
