Skier Dies After Striking Tree at Nakiska

Kananaskis Valley (AB), Canada – A 58-year-old municipal politician died last week after striking a tree while skiing at Nakiska Ski Area in Alberta.

Rick Butler, the deputy reeve of Rocky View County, died of chest injuries sustained in the incident while skiing on Dec. 26 with his two adult daughters at the mountain where he held a season pass. The Alberta native was transported by ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, where he was pronounced dead on Dec. 27.

In addition to his children, Butler leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Gwyn.
