Dean Cummings Launches 2013 Steep Life Tour in Seattle This Weekend

Seattle, WA – Legendary big mountain skier, mountain guide and Alaska heli-skiing pioneer Dean Cummings will be in Seattle and Bellevue, Wash., this weekend to present his award-winning avalanche education program, Steep Life Protocols, and screen his new film “Chugach,” which documents the implementation of protocols to achieve lifelong first descents.  This is the first leg of his annual fall Steep Life tour, which will bring Cummings to more than 20 locations in Alaska, California, Colorado, Montana, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

Cummings will be at Mountain to Sound Outfitters (to benefit the Northwest Avalanche Center) this Friday to premiere “Chugach,” evo Seattle on Saturday, and Sturtevant’s in Bellevue on Sunday.  He’ll also be signing posters and meeting fans at the Warren Miller Ticket to Ride show in Tacoma on Saturday night.

Cummings’ annual Steep Life Protocols presentations and films help teach thousands of skiers and snowboarders how to stay more safe in the mountains through practical terrain management.  Cummings has refined these protocols over the last 24 years of guiding in the mountains and by pioneering thousands of first descents.

“Chugach” features Cummings’ stunning technical descents in the Chugach Range of Alaska, one of the snowiest, most glaciated mountain ranges on Earth. Included in the film shot over the past two seasons are a first descent of Mount Francis — within sight of downtown Valdez — and the peaks known as Godzilla and Hourglass, deep within the range and only accessible by helicopter. “Chugach” also shows Cummings’ first descent of the Dragon’s Back spine on Meteorite Mountain, and a descent of the Tusk proper, both iconic peaks near Valdez.
